The SoulFunktion team aims to provide a safe space and strong sense of community to support the creative expression of each individual involved. SoulFunktion provides DJing, dance, and welcomes other modes of collaborative expression. In the past, some participants have brought their own instruments to jam with, including rappers and singers rhyming through amplified mics, makeup artists painting drag faces on attendees, and photographers/filmmakers documenting the entire experience. SoulFunktion welcomes anyone’s contribution to the space of creation. What is your function? How can we function simultaneously?

SoulFunktion is rooted in Hip Hop culture, but it is not married to one particular style of music or dance, welcoming multicultural presence and expression. SoulFunktion parties are not typical Hip Hop training sessions, where people often go back and forth in battle; rather, these parties bring both dancers and non-dancers together in a non-competitive environment. SoulFunktion believes that communing through dance and music is an overlooked form of social intervention and protest.
