Green Screen Film Series: Daughters of the Dust

Presented by The Contemporary Austin at The Contemporary Austin - Laguna Gloria

At the dawn of the twentieth century, a multigenerational family in the Gullah community on the Sea Islands off of South Carolina—former West African slaves who adopted many of their ancestors’ Yoruba traditions—struggle to maintain their heritage and folklore while contemplating a migration to the mainland.

Daughters of the Dust, the first wide release by a black female filmmaker, this acclaimed film has cast a long legacy, recently influencing Beyoncé’s video album Lemonade. This restored edition beautifully showcases the cinematography of Arthur Jafa.

Directed by Julie Dash, 1991, 112 min., PG.
