Jennifer Sherburn presents a new work merging modern dance and auto cinema featuring a cast of 10 choreographers, original Music by William West and Lighting Design by Stephen Pruitt.
Against the backdrop of an original score by William West, a cast of 10 dancers – along with their vehicles – will create a textured outdoor viewing experience echoing themes from 11:11:07, which debuted May 2017 at Sertodo Copper. Now, 2018’s “Drive In” will evolve its characters, from the taken…to the takers.
Inspired by car movies such as “Drive,” “Baby Driver,” and the “Fast and Furious” franchise, dancers will explore the moods and physicality of this classic genre, with movement that is by turns commanding, watchful, and frenetic. Staged at up-and-coming arts and performance space 3506 Rogge Lane, nicknamed “Rogge Ranch” and owned by Marcie Poss, “Drive In” will feature music by William West, a veteran of countless national ad campaigns for clients such as BMW, Hyundai, Honda, and American Airlines. He has been orchestrator for major video games including numerous Marvel/Electronic Arts franchises, such as Spider Man, Fantastic Four, and X-Men.
With lighting design by Stephen Pruitt (award-winning resident production designer of Forklift Danceworks, Tapestry Dance Company, and Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance) audience members will sit outside at Rogge Ranch, amid a surround sound-like atmosphere. “Drive In” will also feature a pre-show, taking audience members through an immersive sound installation designed by West. Guests can enjoy farm fresh, locally-sourced food from Eden East restaurant of Springdale Farms, who will be on-hand serving a casual, a la carte menu.
The project is funded and supported in part by the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division.
