New works by Elizabeth Chiles
Weave, a solo exhibition of new work by Elizabeth Chiles, begins with the central question of how to express visually various points of intersection of our lives and the breath, light and time that holds them.
Works include photographic collages that combine, reconfigure and shift Chiles’s images responding to the mind’s eye and the sensuous take-aways connected to a place, as well as a group of natural pigment paintings made from wild flowers and grasses. Chiles introduces her use of new formats, including wide images that embrace the all encompassing nature of the panorama, and long ones embracing two widely different, but equally important, references: sacred scrolls and wallpaper. Her use of abstract color (color that is not representational, but based on perception, after-image, and the effects of spectral light), flatness and openness are also expanded upon in works for the show.
