The sound of Armenian Santour

Presented by Musical Connections and Russian Speakers Society of Austin, TX at Austin Scottish Rite Theater

Performance will feature Armenian music performed on the santour, the Armenian national instrument, with piano and Armenian dhol (Armenian percussion) accompaniment. Armenian santour maestro Sarkis Petrosian, internationally acclaimed pianist Hamayag Hovanessian with Artour Galstyan. The Trio also invites Zhenya Rock, a very famous guitar player from Flying Balalaika Brothers. They will perform folk and Classical music which spans the Armenian tradition from the 12th century to the 20th century. The performers were classically trained at the Komitas State Conservatory for Music of Yerevan. The santour, similar to the Romanian cimbalom or the Ukrainian cimbali, is a stringed instrument, a hammered dulcimer played with mallets to create a unique range of sound.
