West Austin Studio Tour At Texas Folklife Gallery - Featuring The Upshaws Of County Line Exhibit

Presented by Texas Folklife at Texas Folklife

Texas Folklife is a participant gallery in the 2018 WEST Austin Studio Tour. Please join us for WEST, we will have drinks and snacks available throughout the tour.

Our gallery will feature photography exhibit The Upshaws of County Line: An American Family. This exhibt presents photographs and oral history collected by photographer Richard Orton over a twenty-five year period in the freedom colony of County Line, an African American community founded by the Upshaw family after Emancipation. Their story is the story of emancipated blacks who, unlike most others, created a relatively autonomous existence for themselves after being enslaved.
