Taino drums and music workshop

Taino drums and music workshop

Presented by Puerto Rican Cultural Center at Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance and Cultural Center

Do you feel called to learn Taino percussion and music?
Are you coming to Earth Day (April 22)?
Bring your maraca! This free workshop will teach Taino drumming, percussion, and an original song in Taino. In preparation for Earth Day — we will learn to play the music for a community Areyto (Taino ceremonial dance) that will be part of this celebration. Like to dance? We’ll take basic Areyto steps too.
Tekina-eirú Maynard, our workshop leader, is a lifetime member of El Concilio Taino Guatu Ma-cu A Boriken from Puerto Rico. She writes original Areytos (songs) in Taino, in the tradition of her Pueblo. Tekina-eirú is a proud blood descendant of the Tainos of Boriken, with family line dating back to the Arcaicos (Ancient Ones), the Island’s earliest inhabitants.
