Ballet East Dance Company "Capirotada" Fall 2017 Production

Presented by Ballet East Dance Company at Dougherty Arts Center

Ballet East Dance Company introduces a unique mix of choreography to highlight the fall artistic season in “Capirotada en Movimiento.”

“Capirotada is bread pudding,” says director Rodolfo Méndez, “typically served during the holidays, and especially delicious with whipped cream or ice cream. It’s the ultimate eclectic dish, and one we all anticipate. I feel the same excitement presenting the work of talented local choreographers.”

Austin favorite Sharon Marroquín directs an excerpt from “Las Cuatro Estaciones: A Story of Human Trees” a piece she created in the Latino Arts Residency Project at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center. Inspired by uncertainty, mortality, and nature, this evocative work explores transformation and our attempts to surrender gracefully to inevitable change.

Lotus Contemporary Performing Arts uses a bench as a focal point for individual choices and social interactions in “Going At The Stop.” Director Melissa Villarreal explains, “much like approaching a yellow traffic light in the middle of a road, we must choose to either slow down and stop, or go full steam ahead.”

Choreographer and performer Andrea Ariel will dance a solo. “Andrea is always original,” Méndez says, “and I look forward to her contribution.”

Aurelio P. Rodríguez came to Austin from an award-winning career in Cuba. Méndez explains, “he has been working on ‘En Medio de la Nada’, which could be translated as ‘in the middle of nothingness’, with local dancers. Aurelio’s style is unique–he adds a strong dash of acrobatic masculinity to the program.”

Ballet East’s outreach program to young people will be represented by traditional Mexican folkloric dances under the direction of Miguel Marroquín. Méndez reflects, “since we began including the outreach students in our programs, Miguel has given them more intricate and difficult dances, and they have surprised us by mastering them. Our audiences love to see the students—they’re the ice cream to our capirotada.”
