Build a Ballet Carnival of the Animals

Program description

Since 2000, Build-a-Ballet / The Carnival of the Animals has introduced thousands of elementary-aged students to the process of creating a work of art.

Dancers from Ballet Austin’s exclusive Butler Fellowship Program perform nine excerpts from The Carnival of the Animals with choreography by Ballet Austin’s Artistic Director Stephen Mills and original music by Camille Saint Saëns.

Students participate in choreographing a short dance phrase that is eventually incorporated into the ballet. We also discuss basic elements of dance choreography, including shape, action, space, time, and partnering. This 50-minute program is presented at Ballet Austin or in schools.
