The Phoenix Theatre was founded in 2008 by a group of students lead by artistic director Matrex Kilgore in order to create an environment allowing students to create art in a structured atmosphere. They wanted to follow the legacy of The Curtain Club by: infusing the ideals of students taking their art into their own hands, keeping artistic excellence at the forefront of their work, and expanding the opportunities and experiences for undergraduates in the Department of Theatre and Dance. The Phoenix founded two bi-annual events, The Undergraduate Playwrighting Workshop, a laboratory to develop new works created by undergrads, and The Phoenix Fringe, a festival where students have the opportunity to create shows in a festival atmosphere.
