The mission of Austin Book Arts Center is to engage people of all ages in creative, interpretive, and educational experiences related to the arts of the book. ABAC regularly offers workshops in letterpress printing, bookbinding, paper making, typography, book history and design, and various arts of the book. In addition, ABAC will provide access to equipment for qualified users during regularly scheduled Open Studio times. VISION Through its activities, ABAC seeks to advance the book as a vital contemporary art form, preserve the traditional and robust crafts related to making books, promote the contemporary arts of making books, inspire diverse artists and learners, and engage the community in creative, interpretive, and educational experiences, including the improvement of literacy for people of all ages. ABAC rejects the millennial notion that the printed book is no longer relevant. For centuries, the book has been the prime mode for communicating knowledge and continues to be a vital force for literacy and education. We envision a future where books continue to play an important role in our everyday lives. Our children and grandchildren will share with us the tactile experience of holding a book in our hands and turning the pages, no batteries required. Through books we learn of the world around us; imaginations are sparked; spirits are ignited. We seek continuity in these intellectual experiences and wish to share the delight in the sight and touch of a well-constructed book.

  • Austin Metro Drug-Free Coalition Media Project
Austin Metro Drug-Free Coalition Media Project
Classes;  Educational;  Film & Video;  Free Events;  Kids & Families;  Nonprofit;  Special Events;  Theatre
Overview The Austin Metro Drug-Free Coalition Media Project wants to help prevent drug and alcohol abuse by at-risk 6th-12th graders via Public Service Announcements and short film. Visual mediums can be transformative, and students can become something more from this experience. We understand that education and advocacy alone aren’t going to change the youth, however, it’s about encouraging them to take specific action. It’s about our actions and theirs alongside education and advocacy, and together, through a process, we’ll encourage a positive behavioral change in the community and fulfill our mission. Filmmaking is not only entertaining it’s also a catalyst for social change. These projects will serve as a unique and noteworthy perspective that Austin will be on the cutting edge of. This program fosters creativity, mentorship, healthy habits, critical thinking, resilience building, and self-awareness. Our Mission Our youth’s authentic lens is underrepresented in the media. To understand their perspective and struggles, this platform and these tools will build the necessary skills they need to bring their vision to life. We are a team of diverse filmmakers who strive to pass along our shared knowledge, skills, and resources to the next generation of young creatives. We set out to accomplish this mission by providing lessons in practical video production to underrepresented youth. We believe the education they’ll receive and the teamwork involved in video production can be a transformative experience. With reliable guidance, our at-risk youth can create media that represents their shared experiences while preparing them for future success.
