For its 12th season, Young Shakespeare, Austin Shakespeare’s teen company, will rise to the occasion with a creative staged reading of Shakespeare’s comedy, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, via Zoom on Thursday, June 25 at 7 p.m.
Inspired by music from Galt MacDermot, who wrote the rock musical HAIR, the production will feature 1970s style costume design. For more than a decade, Austin Shakespeare has brought the power and potential of Shakespeare to area teens through its Young Shakespeare program. Performances are usually staged at the Curtain Theatre, but this year the COVID-19 shutdown has inspired innovation. “We are really embracing the new reality of a Zoom performance,” said co-director Nancy Eyermann. “This talented group has not missed a beat. They are as energized, engaging and fun to watch on screen as they are live on stage.”
Eyermann said the company has several surprises that they hope will delight audiences. “Young Shakespeare is always an exciting adventure,” she said. “This year is no different.”
Young Shakespeare actors range from ages 11-19, come from Austin, Pflugerville, Kyle and Dale, and attend Anderson High School, Lehman High School, Cherry Creek High School, UT Austin, Southwestern University, Murchison Middle School, Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA), and area home schools. The young company is trained by professionals, with co-direction by Ann Ciccolella and Nancy Eyermann and features actors from the adult Austin Shakespeare company. Alumni actors include: Ben Frey as Proteus, Campbell Collins as Julia; Fin Fulmer as the rival Thurio; Anastacia Weiss as the comic side-kick Lucetta; Alley Koenig as Launce with her dog; John Kilfoyle as the slow “Speed;” Eleanor Walter as the captivating Silvia; Mercy Olguin as the Duchess of Milan; Richard White as the humorous Eglamour; Madelyn Reed as Antonio and the leader of the zany “outlaws.”
New to Young Shakespeare are: Gabriel Cruz as the other amorous gentleman, Valentine; Sam Stavchansky as Panthino and Lucky Cantu joining as part of the zany “outlaws.”
