Petty thief Marda (Jia Hongsheng) kidnaps Moudan (Zhou Xun) to demand a ransom from her rich father, but before he can get a return on his gamble, she escapes him by jumping into the Suzhou River. After his arrest, he meets a beguiling woman, MeiMei (also played by Zhou Xun), whose face resembles that of his victim and lost love.
