Resonance is a site-specific music event by Austin percussionist Chris Cogburn and Mexico City composer Iván Naranjo. The one-hour piece moves seamlessly between elements of performance and sound installation to put into dialogue the dynamic resonances of St. Martin Ev Lutheran Church’s singular acoustic space.
Artist Statement:
We analyze the resonant frequencies and reverberations of both the architectural space and Cogburn’s percussion instruments, using electronics as a catalyst. Our intention is to make audible acoustic phenomena otherwise imperceivable, to create sound shadows and reflections, to bend the aural perspective and to interact and transform the resonant characteristics of the space. In this concert, we re-engage pieces and processes developed during our recent work in Mexico in order to adapt them to the particular acoustic characteristics of St. Martin’s extraordinary architecture.
Project History:
Resonancia (Resonance) was originally created by Cogburn and Naranjo for a specific architectural environment, the Ex-Convento de Santa Teresa in Mexico City, now Ex-Teresa Arte Actual, in June 2018. The duo has since created similar works to augment, amplify, and re-color the acoustic / architectural spaces of Centro Cultural Ex Escuela de Cristo (Aguascalientes – July 2018) and Laboratorio Arte Alameda (Mexico City – September 2018). This will be Cogburn and Naranjo’s first time bringing their burgeoning architectural acoustic explorations to the US.
