Physical Actors Training Workshops

Gale Theatre Company (www.galetheatre.org) is hosting more physical theatre training in June. These trainings are open to actors, performance artists, dancers, directors, designers, or anyone interested in strengthening their physical listening skills and onstage presence. Adults only please (18+). 

Gale Theatre Co is bringing in international performer and artist, Earl Kim for our Biomechanics & Laban workshops. Earl Kim is an international actor, theatre-creator, fight choreographer, and performing artist currently based in Los Angeles, California. His work has been seen in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, South Korea, Russia, and throughout the US. He holds an MFA in Acting from East 15 Acting School in London, and a BFA in Contemporary Performance from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. He is also an Apprentice Instructor with the British Academy of Dramatic Combat and has staged violence in numerous productions around the world. What is Biomechanics?
Biomechanics was developed to expand the kinesthetic abilities of performers, as well as maximizing the capabilities of the actor’s physical storytelling. This system of training and analyzing movement has been an integral element in the evolution of acting in Russia. Through exercises and practical exploration, students will learn the foundation of Biomechanics and how to apply those concepts to both the physical/technical and text-based work that an actor must undertake.

What is Laban?
Rudolph Laban’s work has been pivotal in the development of dance and choreography in the 20th century. Laban’s organizations of the Body, Effort, Space, and Shape have influenced how we understand and analyze dance and movement. However, his system of movement analysis can be daunting for actors to incorporate and synthesize into character work and expressive physicality. Throughout this workshop, we will attempt to bridge Laban’s analysis with physical explorations that will help actors understand how to utilize Laban’s work to develop truthful, intelligent, and physically embodied characters.

Suzuki Whaaaa?
The Suzuki method was developed by acclaimed director Tadashi Suzuki and the Suzuki Company of Toga. The training method works to build awareness of the human body – especially its core center with a focus on breath control, concentration and footwork in an effort to heighten the actor’s natural expressiveness and emotional and physical commitment to the theatre. The physicality and discipline of the method is inspired by Japanese and Greek theatre, ballet and martial arts.
