Organist Eric Mellenbruch presents a selection of both composers’ work for organ- at the summit of the art in their day and ours- and joins David Stevens and the St. David’s Compline Choir in infrequently heard choral works that dazzle and delight, in one of the finest venues in Austin for this music.
The program features two of Bach’s six motets for choir, works of supreme difficulty: settings of the Magnificat (Song of the Blessed Virgin Mary) for choir and for solo organ by Buxtehude; and other organ works by Buxtehude, Bach, and Bach’s cousin and colleague, J.G. Walther. Redeemer Presbyterian Church boasts not only superlative acoustics for choral and solo organ music, but also the oldest organ in Texas, a unique and soulful instrument built in 1862 in New England and modified to be especially suitable for Baroque Music.
Eric Mellenbruch is Organist & Associate Music Director of St. David’s and currently Adjunct Lecturer in Organ at the University of Texas. David Stevens is Director of Music of St. David’s Episcopal Church and enjoys a solo conducting and singing career nationwide. The Compline Choir is an accomplished semiprofessional ensemble that sings the ancient monastic service of Compline.
