Commemorating July 4, La Follia re-creates concerts where Thomas Jefferson himself would have played on violin at his mansion in Monticello.
Many works are taken from Jefferson’s musical library, meticulously catalogued by Jefferson himself, with many pieces annotated in Jefferson’s hand. Other works are taken from operas and chamber music performances we know Jefferson attended in France and the United States.

More detail:
In addition to being a Revolutionary, a statesman, a scholar fluent in a half dozen languages, and a President, Thomas Jefferson was a skilled violinist. At his famed mansion in Monticello (which he designed), he would host concerts featuring himself, his family and musical friends, esteemed guests like his good friend Lafayette, and even “captured” British officers.
Jefferson’s taste ranged from French and Italian opera and chamber music, to Scottish folk songs and Anglican hymnody, to American art songs and folk dances. We will perform all these and more as we re-trace Jefferson’s musical life, a fascinating yet largely unknown perspective on this remarkable man.
Special guest is Jonathan Godfrey, violin, concertmaster of Mercury, Houston’s period instrument orchestra.  Performing from La Follia are Joan Carlson, soprano, Marcus McGuff, Baroque flute, Scott Horton, Baroque guitar, and Keith Womer, harpsichord and fortepiano.
