Enthousiasmos: A Lecture Concert Series

Cellist and ACMS faculty member Nora Karakousoglou presents:
“Beyond Zorba the Greek: Innovation in Greek Music in the Twentieth Century”

Listeners will be guided through selected works for solo cello and for cello and piano by Nikos Skalkottas, Solon Michailidis, and Giorgos Kasassoglou, among others. Those pieces will be used to outline the evolution of Greek art music during the twentieth century, which is considered one of the most innovative periods in western music history. A big contributor to this innovation was the work of composers who decisively defied the perceived superiority of the Classical and Romantic German composers, aiming to create a language reflective of their national heritage. In addition to the works performed at the lecture, a playlist of significant works by twentieth century Greek and Cypriot composers will be provided in the form of both a handout and Spotify playlist so that the attendees can further explore Greek music creation as it continues in the twenty-first century.
