The Aztlan Dance Company presents “AZTLAN: On the Rocks,” April 7-10th at Austin’s Santa Cruz Theater, 1805 East Seventh Street. Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 8pm, and the Sunday matinee at 2pm. Tickets are available at www.aztlandance.com.
On the Rocks is an evening-length performance of AZTLAN’s signature dance that blends and fuses tradition and modernity into evocative stories that narrate Austin’s diverse cultures, histories, and experiences. On the Rocks serves up delightful choreo-dramas that range from the whimsically delightful tunes of yesteryear to the deliberately strong interpretations of contemporary eastside barrio culture.
Capturing the spirit of Austin’s diverse Latino/Xicano culture, the performance reflects moving stories that narrate life in the ever-changing borderlands. Says artistic director, Roén Salinas, “as in all of AZTLAN’s repertorio, On the Rocks is about both remembering and re-imagining – locating dance, culture, and community within shared lived experiences and thereby providing fluid ways of making stories relevant and resonant in today’s moment.” The performance merges history and dance into innovative and original stories based in Austin’s Xicano/Latino culture.
