An Amusing Classical Music Parody: ‘1712 Overture’

In 1712 Overture, P.D.Q. Bach makes use of unusual instrumentation and familiar but surprising melodies to engage audience members of all ages. Enjoy this amusing composition at the Austin Civic Orchestra’s concert on May 13 at 4 p.m.

Come early for a free art show (and cookies!) in the lobby of the AISD Performing Arts Center that displays the work of students from across Central Texas submitted to our annual Paint to Music contest. The art show begins at 3:30 p.m.

Led by ACO Music Director Lois Ferrari and Assistant Conductor Gus Sterneman, the orchestra will also perform Divertimento for Orchestra by Anthony Iannaccone; 4’ 33” by John Cage, with audience participation; Dance Rhapsody by Lee Actor; Concerto for Bass Trombone by Thom Ritter George featuring soloist Michael Johnson; and Symphony No. 4 “Heroes” – V. Neuköln by Philip Glass.

This concert is part of the ACO’s “Made in America” season featuring American composers. On June 8 and 9, the orchestra will close its season with free pops concerts at the Zilker Hillside Theater. For details and ACO news, visit www.austincivicorchestra.org.
