The Dionysium offers a unique, innovative program of debate, lecture, declamation, theatrical presentation and music in a salon-like atmosphere on the first Wednesday of every month at the Alamo South Lamar. Audiences enjoy offerings not to be found elsewhere in Austin, including the recitation of famous speeches, participatory discussion in a formal, moderated context, and the opportunity to participate in the recreation of Ancient rituals. A typical Dionysium show will feature a lecture, a declamation, a drinking song, a film or live musical performance, an appeal to Dionysus, a fiction-writing contest, and plenty of strong drink. But the heart of every Dionysium is the debate, pitting two experts against each other in toe-to-toe parliamentary combat. Fifty-one year old Julia Goldman thought she had experi-enced it all. Although she had been widowed for two years, she was left financially well-fixed with two grown children who were busy with their successful careers. Life was routine and uneventful for Julia in her Hollywood home. She thought she would just ease into the rest of her days without anything notable looming on the horizon. Suddenly, "Life with a Capital L" hands her what is to become the biggest decision of her life; the sort of occurrence to which many a younger woman would hardly be equal. An accidental encounter in the cocktail lounge of a posh hotel with a man who sweeps her off her feet and then disappears, leaves her with much more than just a fond memory. She is no longer able to conceal her predicament. The sibling rivalry of her children, plus her own with her flamboyant sister, Verna, add to the complexity and to the resolution of her plight.

Step into the streets of nocturnal Berlin with charismatic German cabaret crooner Max Raabe and his 12-piece big band ensemble Palast Orchester. Since 1986, Raabe and Palast Orchester have transported audiences to Berlin’s Weimar-era cabaret scene of the 1920s and early ’30s with nostalgic renditions of Cole Porter and George Gershwin—and cabaret-style parodies of Britney Spears and Tom Jones. Directed by Professor Jeff Hellmer, the UT Jazz Orchestra is the Butler School of
Music’s premiere jazz ensemble. The Jazz Orchestra has performed in recent years with such luminaries as Michael Brecker, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, Conrad Herwig, and Stefon Harris. The ensemble’s eclectic repertoire features original compositions of its members.

Bassist extraordinaire John Clayton is recognized in both the jazz and classical fields. Eddie Vedder’s solo album, Ukulele Songs, was released on May 31, 2011 through Pearl Jam’s Monkeywrench Records. Recently nominated for the Best Folk Album GRAMMY Award, Ukulele Songs is a collection of original songs and covers performed by Vedder on ukulele.

Also released on May 31st was Water on the Road, a live-concert DVD directed by Brendan Canty of Fugazi and Christoph Green featuring performances from Vedder’s August 16th and 17th 2008 solo tour engagements at Washington, D.C.‘s Warner Theatre.

DIE FLEDERMAUS Johann Strauss, Love, revenge, and drunken joy return to the Butler Opera Center with a new production of Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus. It’s not just the best operetta. It’s ‘the’ operetta.

Die Fledermaus tells the tale of Gabriel von Eisenstein, who decides to attend his friend’s costume ball despite being sentenced to eight days in jail. His wife Rosalinde, believing her husband to be incarcerated, seizes the opportunity to partake in the festivities, and chaos ensues before a Viennese backdrop of glittering waltzes and spirited drinking songs.

On December 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together. The place was Sun Records' storefront studio in Memphis. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the "Father of Rock 'n' Roll," who discovered them all. The four legends-to-be united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time.

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET features a treasure trove of the greatest rock 'n' roll, gospel, R&B and country hits from these music legends, including such iconic songs as Blue Suede Shoes, Fever, Sixteen Tons, Who Do You Love?, Great Balls of Fire, Riders in the Sky, I Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues, and Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On.

Seminal video and performance artist – Jonas presents her cutting edge multi-media video installation. Since the 1970s, Jonas has worked between various mediums, freely incorporating video, movement, music, sculpture, and the spoken word into open-end narratives. Featuring music by Jason Moran, this collaborative work evokes the American Southwest through an artistic consideration of the Hopi snake dance, a ritual that affected Jonas during visits to Arizona in the 1960s.

Tony, a mafia butch and her lover, Alix, a refugee from New York's upper crust, run Maxie's Last Ditch Cafe on an unnamed Florida Key. The bar is a haven for a motley crew of outcasts, as well as the local Dyke hangout.

Maxie's has been doing a brisk business for years, but lately has fallen on hard times. An increasingly vicious hurricane season, political refugees, and the wind of social change threaten a previously timeless and idyllic life.
