Steel canopy, fountain, etched limestone, native landscaping

Wimberley-based artist Roger Colombik, in collaboration with landscape architect Diane Steinbreuck of Winterrowd & Associates, designed a tranquil sculptural environment for the courtyard that offers employees working at the Combined Transportation, Emergency & Communications Center a welcome respite from the rigors and intensity of their jobs. Colombik’s research began with visiting employees in their current work environments and interviewing them to illicit input.  The elements that they most desired were a water feature, formal seating and informal gathering areas. The principal feature of the environment is an “island” whose perimeter is formed by a dry creek bed.  On the island is a large “porch swing” shaded by a canopy.  Famous quotes, words of inspiration and humor contributed by employees etched into 11 limestone pavers are visible from the swing.  Nearby, water gently trickles from a bronze basin on a limestone pillar into a pool of water.  Lush landscaping and randomly placed boulders complete the design and provide informal seating.
