Jim Dougherty, A Retrospective

May 26-June 25. 2017

Reception June 9, 2017 Friday 5:30-8:00pm

This retrospective is composed primarily of black and white selenium-toned gelatin silver prints.

Dougherty studied photography with the late Ansel Adams, Brett and Cole Weston, and apprenticed with Austin commercial and portrait photographer Walter Barnes. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Journalism degree, he joined the staff of the Austin American-Statesman and served both as a copy editor and on the photographic staff. After 13 years, Dougherty opened a full-time commercial photographic business. His clients have included most major US news magazines, corporations, nonprofits, and state agencies.

While at university, Dougherty worked in the Texas Attorney General’s office, which gave him access to photograph during two sessions of the Texas Legislature, which allowed him to be the only photographer to document the storming of the Capitol by students opposed to the Vietnam War. While at the Statesman, Dougherty was elected to the board of directors of the National Press Photographers Association.
