      In the wake of politically-charged public debates about how sex education should be taught in the schools, Weird City Theatre's latest production, "A Teenager's Guide to Love" is a welcome breather from the rancor and nonsense that envelops said debates. It lampoons the sanitized 1950s sex education films that were commonly shown in public high schools- and with musical numbers! I particularly appreciated how Teenager's Guide simultaneously deconstructs and satirizes the 1950s while showing affection for that culture. Sarah Griffin-Covey is excellent as the female romantic lead, Mary. John Carroll did a great job in putting together a 50s-style short film with his actors that was used as part of the production. The band more often than not overpowered the singers in the musical numbers, and the singing itself was unfortunately inconsistent. Having said that, Teenager's Guide is another enjoyable production from Weird City, and well worth checking out for some Spring entertainment. Collapse

      You can always count on Weird City Theatre to not give you what you had just seen them do before even if they often have most of the same actors in their productions. I love seeing range and many illustrate that in this play. Kevin Gouldthorpe, Bethany Harbaugh and Sarah Griffin-Covey sold the 50s/60s. The play is a musical parody of the educational films that my parents watched and my generation - old generation X got to see some variation of. I found the musical range of John Carroll, Robert Berry and especially Sarah Griffin-Covey enjoyable and almost always on beat. I liked the band that was backing the actors but at times the singing got lost due to the band being just louder. The film strips sometimes shown in background were often my biggest laughs. The dating dos and don't being carried out so something I wish we had in real life. The play offered a version of a time long passed but remnants still exist. Care and trying to see the right and wrong of teenage exploration. Bravo. Collapse

      I knew nothing about this group or the steam punk movement but I thoroughly enjoyed the evening! The play is well written and executed. The pacing is as quick as its wit. The time went by so quickly because of the suspension of disbelief that I experienced as I was completely enthralled by all the performances. I loved the naughty Prince!       I am new to Steampunk, and so I studied up on it a bit before the play (and you might also want to Google for more information). It is very interesting to me that this alternative “movement” has been around since the 80’s. It was also coincidental that the art and videos in the Dougherty lobby were also Victorian and so consistent with the Steampunk theme. The costumes in the show were most impressive and I was pleased to discover that I fit in very well with the cast, since I was also wearing flat boots and leather. The sword fights onstage were terrific. The actresses portraying Alvida and Catherine delivered the strongest performances. The play runs about an hour and 15 minutes with one intermission. Collapse

      John F. Carroll's comedy encompasses the steampunk moment in his new play, Alvida and the Airship Pirates. The cast does an excellent job bringing to life this sci-fi world in both a comical and sexy way. Nods go to Kevin Goulthorpe for his performance as Dr. Wrinn and Robert Berry as the King and the Pirate Sylvester. Patti Neff-Tiven is at her best as the lead Alvida. You are missing out if you pass up Weird City's new show! Collapse

      "Giants in Those Days" is, if anything, unique. It's not too usual--until the much troubled Spider-Man musical debuts on Broadway--to see capes and spandex on stage, nor is it average to have the debut of superheroes in any medium deal with the demise of its protagonists, but "Giants" isn't your average play. Colorful and eccentric characters--though a long, expository-filled description of the characters before the first intermission slows the pacing to a crawl--highlighted by actors with a load of heart. Heroes are, tongue-in-cheek-ly cheesy, while one group of villains is as dastardly and cartoony as Snidely Whiplash, with their delicate balance upset by a new sort of villain. "Giants in Those Days" is definitely not for everyone, but if your inner-child still drives you to put a cape or a mask on every once in a while, it's worth checking out. Collapse

      Giants in Those Days is a stage adaptation of a graphic novel set in a post-superhero-apocalypse world. The first act introduces us to our cast, mostly through cartoons and video; the second act picks up the pace with live combat and audience interaction. John Carroll rules the stage as lead supervillain Ringmaster. Russell Minton also turns in a great performance as supercreep fascist mastermind and Bible-thumper Reverend Jason December. The show has an engaging overall concept and a fairly innovative storyline; there are a couple of genuinely moving plot twists; and hot supervillainess Minx shoots fire from her hand for real, which cannot be discounted. As you might expect, the real weakness of the production is in the technical details – homemade costumes, arena-style stage makeup, and clunky combat. But the theater is about invoking imagination – and Giants in Those Days is all about that. Go prepared to believe. Collapse

      Giants in Those Days is nothing if not original. I can honestly say that I've never seen a staged version of a comic book. It involves an eccentric old man telling two young comic-book fans about the real heroes and villains of the past, and we see an enactment of the epic fictional battles from their points of view- of the Heroes of the Superior Union taking on the Villains of the Karnivale. Admittedly, I thought some parts of Giants dry, and it's not for everyone. Nonetheless, it is definitely an example of a bold experiment in theatre, of doing something original just for the sake of creativity, so anyone who appreciates that will enjoy Giants in Those Days.
