Gnap! Theater Projects

Gnap! Theater Projects produces the Out of Bounds Improv Festival and Miniature Golf Tournament, shows by the improv duo Get Up, and various theatrical events and endeavors around town. For 4 years they produced No Shame Theatre at the Hideout. Saturday Night Special is their latest showcase, a series of improv shows in partnership with the Merlin Works Institute for Improvisation.

      Not being a huge fan of improv, I was uncertain how I would like the puppets, improv and music combination of Crack! However, it proved to be one of the most entertaining evenings I have had in a long time. The puppets were beautifully animated by players who were very involved and enthusiastic, giving these bits of fabric, fluff and eyeballs personalities, feelings and motivations. I very much enjoyed watching the wheels turn and the resultant creation was delightful. I would definitely consider a repeat if the troupe makes another attempt. Collapse

      Have you ever seen a puppet improvise about american idol? Lick the streets of Hollywood? The Gnap! company members are in full view as they romp their way through puppet musical numbers and shock and amaze their special guest stars. Most of the puppets were created by the company for this spectacular, and I have to say, I have my favorites. The Black Sheep. Lady Pink Curls. Dog Ears. Legless Vamp. (My own names) Loved the large, round googly eyes! Warning. This show is not for the very young, but definitely is perfect for the young at heart. Some audience participation, but nothing to be afraid of. It is made for the performer hidden in each of us. Collapse

      I LOVED THIS SHOW! Sadly, I had never heard of Stephen Merritt or his songs. But after googling him up and watching a few videos, I knew this show was departure from traditional theater, and wanted to see it. Stephens songs inspired the writers and actors to conjure up some refreshingly honest and amusing loves scenes about ALL of loves myriad illusions, foibles, inspirations and riches. I was particularly impressed with choice made in the crowd or party scenes. Each cast member plays a diversity of roles and seemed to be having a great time with them all. 69 Love Scenes is enchantingly unpredictable, amusingly honest and engagingly intimate. I plan to see parts 1 and 3 the next two weeks. Hope to see you there! Collapse

      This show, two nights only, is a first in Austin, TX. An improvised puppet musical! There will be two acts, with a short intermission. Act I will consist of games and scenes based on audience suggestions. In turn, those scenes will inspire the themes in Act II -- a completely improvised puppet musical. Locally created, produced and directed, this show stars an adorable cast of puppets and their insane Austin improviser puppeteers. Special guest star, Jordan Maxwell, is a powerhouse musical improviser visiting from Los Angeles. Maxwell makes this fun show really awesome. Grab your tickets now, while you still can! Collapse

      I've seen this show several nights, and each one was unique and fun. The 4-5 different improv groups that rotate through this show every month are top notch troupes with different styles of improv ranging from fast-paced short form improv, to unscripted narrative plays, to fully improvised musicals. The line-up always makes for an entertaining show, no matter which night you go. And because it's improv, every show is different! Collapse

      Dusk was great! I took my 15 year-old and we laughed the entire time. The relaxed atmosphere made it enjoyable for her first time at the theater. The show was appropriate for a teen age viewer and yet... Expand

      It's like comedy and theater at the same time. I play in a lot of shows there and it's some of the best improv in town. And every night is different. BYOB and Free parking too.
