      Not even the detailed description of the show prepared me for how it dark it actually was. I was expecting a quasi-children’s puppet show. That it was not. But don’t let that deter you. It’s tone in no way garnered a negative response from me, I felt quite the opposite. It was refreshing to see social commentary infused original theatre in Austin. With puppets nonetheless. The show came together gracefully, from the actual puppetry to lighting to sound. I especially enjoyed Ulad’s character (casting) and felt incredibly sad for him when his gentle boy voice no longer matched his gentle boy body. Great work by the company, would love to see a more extended version of this or another show. The piece was engaging from start to finish. The opening act was enjoyable to watch, I'd say more dog and less human next time. But that's just because she was so cute (and skilled). Collapse

Troubled Puppet continued their tradition of excellence. The lead actors did an excellent job in some difficult situations. (Keep working those transitions.) Collapse

      This was my first Trouble Puppet show I have seen, and I'll definitely be back for more. With puppeteers and set changes visible to the audience, I thought it would be difficult to suspend my disbelief--boy I was wrong. I was drawn into this dark and twisted world very easily. These puppets are so simple, but so incredibly lifelike. You really feel for them. There's a bittersweet ending to this show, but I'm not going to give it away. This is a great new-age Grimm's fairy tale. An additional joy is the Circus Chickendog pre-show, with juggling, unicycle tricks, and a very cute dog doing very cute dog things. The only downside (which wasn't Trouble Puppet or SVT's fault) was the poor audience etiquette. A ton of people came in long after the show had started, which was distracting. A girl sitting next to us was texting literally through the whole show as well. So please remember to be courteous and kind to both performers and your fellow audience members. Collapse

      This review sort of covers two events that happened in the same evening. I had come to see the Crapstall Street Boys done by the ever entertaining Trouble Puppets group. The pre-show entertainment was Circus Chickendog. They did some great entertaining with juggling, balance tricks and a entertaining dog that added to the tricks and treats. The show quickly changed to the Crapstall Boys which had the puppeteers playing a variety of roles and doing a good job with voices. There is a good use of a camera called a puppet-cam which showed at times very different. The use of the puppets makes them have their saga come to life. This is something Trouble Puppets do so well. I don't want to give away too much of the story but can say one thing - it makes you glad for your own situation hopefully. The fictional town has a war with monsters that come out at night. The people in the town are at the mercy of them and life is pretty harsh. Its a show worth seeing and hope you do. Yay Trouble Puppets! Collapse

      An evening away from the norm should always begin with a small juggling act. The little circus dog almost stole the entire show. And the contrast from happy hopping uni-cycling, to typical Trouble Puppet work, was lovely. Trouble Puppet has pretty much always produced stimulating work worthy of a ticket purchase. This experiment in the making was no different. Had this been a full blown performance, I would have demanded better camera angles, as for some duration the floor of the set was all I could see. If it was intentional, it shouldn't have been. The puppeteers all did great. It was fun and clearly they were having a good time, too. I would enjoy seeing this as a full length production. The story was captivating and the characters were portrayed with solid depth. I also believe this would make a splendid children's show as I would rather kids watch this, than Barney. Good job, Connor. Collapse

      As a newbie to the word of dramatic puppetry, I was joyfully stunned by the effect of this performance. It was surprisingly cinematic, quick-moving and graceful. Its puppet-characters exploited their non-humanness to create moments of high theatricality, to perform would-be life-threatening stunts (like diving down a meat grinder) and to hyper-focus our attention on the slightest movement, making us sensitive to the possible meaning behind each gesture. The relationships between audience, puppets and puppeteers created a series of overlapping fourth walls which were broken artfully and potently. And the nature of the medium allowed me to suspend my disbelief far beyond the grace I'd allow flesh-and-blood actors. Clever, magical and affecting, "The Jungle" is a cautionary tale against the horrors of human labor crimes that tackles familiar territory with fresh imagination and poignancy. Collapse

      Connor Hopkins and Trouble Puppet Company are “the modern Prometheus” of puppetry in Austin – they have expertly “stolen” and given life to the technical skills of Japanese bunraku and the political sensibility of European puppet theatre. Frankenstein (the man) disturbs the social order, first with science and then the occult. Things go monstrously bad. “Frankenstein” (the play) layers themes of subversive creation – even the puppets have their puppets! Story dialogue, delivered with aplomb, is a mostly straight-ahead drama with some self-inflicted satirical notes. Script could be more ribald for comedic success and pacing could be faster. Video design and imagery is a perfect complimentary element. Scene change narratives are aphoristic, funny, and effective story-telling. Shadow work by puppeteers behind the screen was lyrically compelling. Frankenstein perhaps needs an intermission. Visit the restroom before you sit. But go get a seat for this unique theatre experience. Collapse

      Frankenstein, of course, is the story of a demented scientist's attempt to invigorate the inanimate with a spark of life. In Trouble Puppet's great production, the secret is... theater! Sort of. There's an incredible meta-puppetry story going on here: the puppeteers bring to life the characters who bring to life their own creatures, and in some cases, their own puppets. The puppets' puppets which come to life are emblematic of everything great about this production -- there's just so much love and character in those little guys! And there's so much love all over this show; each character is precisely and compassionately crafted and manipulated (and beheaded, more often than not). The script, which is very funny but a little meandering, has an almost Brechtian-quality to it, using puppetry to force us to consider the world intellectually as well as emotionally. But TP's love is what brings Frankenstein to life -- many thanks to Hopkins and company for sharing it with us! Collapse

      Trouble Puppet has done it again with a phenomenal adaptation of Frankenstein. This macabre story is twisted into something more witty than what Ms. Shelley has offered us. Certainly a production worth seeing multiple times. This show is so utterly unique, with beautiful puppet creations and a cast of talented puppeteers, I just can't recommend it enough. Collapse
