Forklift Danceworks

Forklift Danceworks celebrates the extraordinary in the ordinary by creating original performances inspired by the movement of everyday life. By engaging a diverse body of participants and audience through its performances, outreach programs, classes, and workshops, the company empowers all people to be actively engaged in the creative process. Founded in 2001 by Artistic Director Allison Orr, Austin-based Forklift Danceworks creates dances with all kinds of people. Using the movement that people perform in their everyday lives as choreographic material, Forklift Danceworks creates dances with professional dancers and people entirely new to dance. Past company productions have included Venetian gondoliers, City of Austin Solid Waste employees, Elvis impersonators, people who are visually impaired, and women over 65.As part of its goal to foster creativity and serve a diverse audience, Forklift directs Leaps and Bounds—a creative movement program for children at two Austin-area schools, and Body Shift—ongoing classes in mixed-ability dance (classes accessible to people with and without disabilities). By creating dances that engage a diverse audience—both as audience and performer—Forklift Danceworks broadens access to contemporary dance while building community and fostering the creative spirit.

      Allison Orr, Forklift Danceworks' artistic director, defines “success” as asking, "Is that dance?" If so, Orr succeeded. However, that sells short. Each piece held my attention as it effectively melded movement to music. The first half most impressed. In "A Series with a Chair and an 11-Foot Line" by Mari Akita, Katherine Hodges echoed and complemented the video image of herself behind her. In the intriguing final sequence, Hodges interacts with a chair directly in front of her similarly interacting video image. The interplay between live self, "live" shadow, video image and video shadow was musical. In "So Far Ago," 70+ Frank Yezer, who studied and worked with some of the great dancers of the last century, and Sharon Marroquin, in her 30s, both moved beautifully and gracefully. Poignantly, youth looked forward to age’s inevitable limitations while age remembered youth's ease of body. “The Massage Therapy Dance: showcased that profession’s movements.       I really wanted to see the Trash Project. As it rained all day yesterday I thought it would be cancelled and performed today (the published rain date). Yesterday afternoon I looked everywhere I could think of for a number or way to find out if it was going to happen because of the rain, and I found nothing so I didn't go. In checking this site today I see that it did happen yesterday. I am so sorry I missed it and hope that in the future when the weather is questionable that there will be a way to confirm the event. Would love to see video from the performance. Collapse
