      O.K. First, the eyes DO NOT follow you around the room. Or do they? Blanton’s vaults yielded a smorgasbord of portraits, iconic images by leading artists spanning six centuries, with one exception. (See exhibit squib this page for the impressive list.) The intimate groupings reinforce the contrasting views of the artists and their approaches to revealing what’s psychologically relevant about each person portrayed...or, perhaps, about the artist? Both famous persons and unknowns are depicted doing what they do, being adored (or studied) from near and afar. Siqueiros’ painting of pianist Gershwin in concert is a fine example. Beyond conveying social position and flattering likenesses, portraiture is about self-appraisal. With the artist/sculptor’s skills, a talented notion of the essential self emerges.       40 portraits, various mediums, wide-ranging time periods, mainly from the Blanton’s own collection are displayed. Very diverse choices, from an ancient Roman bust of Marcus Aurelius to a Warhol painting and Umlauf sculpture of Farrah Fawcett’s face. There’s something for every patron to enjoy or at least examine & discuss: A “video portrait;” a grouping of small canvases of skin tone colors (not exactly my personal definition of portraiture; contemporary pieces like the encased figure of “Patrick,” whose surface consists of body part photos by artist Oliver Herring. Definitely thought-provoking. Specifically for B Scene, several models were cleverly dressed by Austin stylists to resemble subjects in the portraits. Very engaging. “About Face” info invites visitors viewing the art to ask questions: “Who are these persons?” “What do the artists want us to know about them?” Take the free cell phone audio tour or spring for an audio wand to help find the answers.       One of the most beautiful displays of Art is from Turner to Monet at the Blanton Art Museum. It is a collection of Art from the Walters Art Museum. As you enter the gallery, the first thing that you will see is Mr. Walters portrait. You are certainly in for a treat when you view his portrait. As you start your tour you will see a painting of a sunset in the rugged countryside with huge clouds billowing Above. The Turner to Monet Art Exhibit reminds me of the song by Rufus Wainwright. He goes to the museum with his classmates and he asks the art teacher who his favorite painter is and the art teacher says TURNER.I of course, love Monet’s art. Also, you should stop by the museum store and check out some of their items from butterfly pins to clutch bags with Monet as the print on the bag; also check out the umbrella’s with the Monet type print. Would I go again? You bet. 5*’s. Collapse

      See and "B" Seen at Austin’s B Scene on UT campus! First Fridays at the Blanton Museum mix art, music, friends, food, and drinks up for you in a delectable combination. This month surely must have been its best so far. The Monet exhibit was fantastic and highly recommended. Our group spent quite some time in the exhibit, especially in front of the first landscape to your right. The docent told us the historical stories about it. The music was entrancing. I had heard of Chrysta Bell, the singer, for quite some time from some friends and so I was anticipating a chance to hear the new band with David Garza. I had no idea what was in store for me as I stood hypnotized, yet swaying to her music, her ethereal voice, and fabulous blue dress. The band said they only played museums (Perhaps because they used to play the “Gallery” above the Continental?) Luckily the band said they would be there for every Friday from here forward. Oh…were they joking? What combination will the B have next time? Collapse

      Don’t know this Frenchman, then by all means, meet Matisse – regarded as one of the three seminal artists of the 20th century and a leading figure in modern art. Don’t know much about printmaking processes? Me neither. Not to worry. The brochure for “Matisse As Printmaker” contains a great glossary and clear explanations. My suggestion: Pick it up first and head for the Blanton Café. Don’t rush. Relax. Enjoy a sandwich, dessert, a coffee drink or smoothie while you “read up.” Then go to the gallery. If you’re expecting to see his vivid use of color, you may be disappointed. However, this is an ideal collection for embracing his fluid and original drawings and to appreciate the artist’s growth, decade by decade. Lots of nudes, yes, but nothing so salacious that a young teen visitor to the show will break into embarrassed giggles. And remember Thursday are always free, with Third Thursdays featuring a monthly themed event, extended hours (9 PM), multiple programs (more) Collapse

      Henri Matisse, perhaps better known as a sculptor and an extraordinary artist, is revealed at the Blanton as a thoughtful, sometimes edgy printmaker, exploring such techniques and processes for more than 50 of his 85 years. Unless you’re a serious art student, you don’t really have to know an etching from an aquatint; a monotype from a lithograph; a woodcut from a linoleum cut. Simply appreciate this exhibition of graphic virtuosity. There are 61 pieces of art, some as series, drawings of his children and even a self portrait. However Matisse’s narrow range focused on one of his favorite themes, nudes (mine, too), typically reclining or seated. Jay Fisher of the Baltimore Museum of Art has organized the works in a manner that elevates the viewer’s appreciation of the artist’s ongoing refinements. Each unfolding sequence is like “a pause along the path” of Matisse’s expanding, artistic sensibilities. The lighting is subdued in this gallery, so take a few minutes (more) Collapse

      We arrived to the B scene around 9pm and the place was packed with well dressed Austinites. No snacks remained and there was quite a line for the bar so with Suzanne Choffel playing in the background, we went straight for the main event - the Blanton's new show Desire . The show is intended to "exploring the capacities of painting, video, sculpture, drawing and other contemporary mediums to express direct emotion" but overall I found it a bit lacking. I thought some of the video pieces featured seem better suited to Youtube than an art museum's wall. There were pieces I did like: Glenn Ligon's series, Lest We Forget and a series of older sometimes playful, sometimes sinster black and white line drawings were each worth a long look. Despite my luke warm respond to the art, it was a pleasure to see it in the context of the energetic, very date worthy, B Scene. For members of the Blanton, admission to B Scenes are a real value although non-members may want to do some research before. Collapse

      Titillating and Tantalizing come to mind when describing the wonderfully curated new show at The Blanton! Desire is just that. Prepare to push any old-fashioned or conservative boundaries aside! Favorite pieces to make sure to check out include Robert Kushner's "Scriptorium, Georganne Deen's "The Inner Cry" and Petah Coyne's "Untitled #1103. Also, The Blanton has added some pieces from their collection that represent Desire including Paul Cezanne's "Les Baigneurs"! Collapse

      I love a poetry slam. Why? I guess because I am a voice teacher and find it thrilling when people are just naturally attracted to language and how sounds work together to create an effect. Artists verbalizing live expression of inner feeling, discovery and human experience was all the buzz on Friday night at the B-scene. The use of vocal tone, verbal rhythm, texture, imagery of individual sounds and words as unlikely partners provided an aural exhibit adjacent to the current Francisco Matto showing. Somehow the evening felt different -- onlookers listened to the art being spoken rather than choosing to retreat to the visual representation hanging in the next room. Some climbed the stairs on their way up to the permanent collection, but most seemed to hover and glide to the beat of the word.
