Dance Umbrella

Dance Umbrella believes that dance helps describe, define, and deepen the experience of living. Dance Umbrella believes that dance is a kinetic form of communication, which includes all forms of movement and physical expression. Dance Umbrella facilitates the interactions among the various roles involved in creating, performing, presenting, teaching and observing the arts. Dance Umbrella develops programs that encourage and facilitate learning at all levels and specifically supports the work of contemporary movement artists who are emerging onto the national and international dance arena. Dance Umbrella's presentations are meant to educate, challenge, inspire and expand audiences by communicating to the community the power, history and culture of dance.

      Wow. What a moving, intense, gorgeous statement by a diverse group of men. One classically trained dancer, 4 B-boys and 2 drummers/percussionists. From the atmospheric score of rhythm, sounds and music, to religious text and spoken word, to strong bodies executing amazing shapes and moves, my attention was riveted to the stage from the moment I entered this sacred space. We traveled from the Zulu nation to Maori war rituals to inner city America to Iraq to pre-man, death and dust. Special mention to the teaming mass of mankind pulling at Rudi while speaking his treatise to man/war, ending in annihilation. This is the last time this piece will be performed. One audience member stated during the talk back, "You have changed my life - forever." Another, "Every child in America should see this piece." Run, don't walk, to the Long Center to pay witness to an amazing journey, for the dancers, the musicians and you. Collapse

      Julie Dossavi delivers a one-woman performance of dance formed at the intersection of traditional Africa and contemporary France. Accompanied by a griot, singer Diarra Papa Gedeon from Mali, Dossavi takes us on a journey both personal and global. The physicality of her dance is powerful; every muscle seems to move, and still she provides the subtlety of intricate mudras sequenced with haunting looks, much like the traditional dance of India. It is well worth a visit to "P.I." to experience world culture through dance, ritual, song and percussion. The trip would not be complete without the outstanding music of Houdayer and Talbot, who appropriately use a blend of electronic music and traditional African percussion instruments like you've never seen. Only one night left. Don't miss it! Collapse
