The Austin Film Society promotes the appreciation of film and supports creative filmmaking and community events.

The Austin Film Society began in 1985 with a group of friends getting together to watch films that weren't distributed to the general public. As word got out, that small group of cinephiles turned to hundreds and the Austin Film Society (AFS) was born, honoring classic and independent film with screenings in venues all over Austin.

 

This project is funded and supported in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and in part by the City of Austin Economic Growth & Redevelopment Services Office/Cultural Arts Division believing an investment in the Arts is an investment in Austin’s future.       "Days of Being Wild" is, according to the Austin Film Society, one of filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai's "most profound films." If so, I fear I missed the profoundness. It takes place in Hong Kong in the early 1960s, and centers around the life of a young man named York. The story begins with him seducing a store owner named So Lai-Chun. He quickly abandons her, because she wants total commitment, which he can't give. Another woman enters his life, and her fate is similar. We learn that York never knew his biological mother, who hired a surrogate, Rebecca, to raise him. Rebecca callously refuses to help York in his quest to find his mother. That's what the story is, but I found the presentation meandering and confusing, and the performances did not have enough pathos to make me care about the characters.       The story of the Days of Being Wild is a tale of a playboy who wins and breaks womens hearts and leaves a trail of broken women who try to cope afterward. That is the impression that I got. The story seems simple enough and perhaps its just the way Hong Kong movies are made but I found many scenes either confusing or placed in the wrong spot. I stayed awake during hte whole film and found that it had a variety of entertaining characters. It was nice to see life in the 1960s depicted in something besides a war torn Vietnam out of the far east. I have found that the acting was well done for the scenes that were played out. I had seen very little of Hong Kong movies and hope to see more. Collapse

      I really enjoyed Certified Copy. The film was, I think, deliberately ambiguous, with neither the characters nor the viewers sure of the true nature of the relationship between the two main characters. The fast switching between languages also contributed to the fluid nature of the storyline. The scenery was beautiful, in the small Italian town with its winding cobblestone streets. The film was beautifully acted, as well. Juliette Binoche was especially fantastic, able to evoke strong emotion while going between her just-met and long-married personae. The film was thought-provoking; I definitely talked about it a lot more after seeing it than I do other films. I'd like to see it again. Collapse

      Much of what I saw for the film Certified Copy left me wondering what is the relationship of these two characters. One is left to believe in the beginning of the film that they are complete strangers that meet at a book signing. As time goes by the audience is given more and more clues that these people either know each other and are married or doing well hell of a good job of being in some fantasy role playing game. The movie comes to an abrupt end which leaves this audience member wondering what has happened. Part of my loving of this film is the region it is filmed at. Tuscany, who could not love it. The acting is pretty good. It deals with relationships and even if you have not ever had one you know what not having one is like. The movie is worth a view as long as you know you are just going to see a piece of life and not have anything truly answered. Enjoy. Collapse

      Trying to convey a sense of what the film might have been like through existing footage of contemporary actors performing key moments from the film, co-directors Serge Bromberg and Ruxandra Medrea Annonier did not have an easy task but executed it with some continuity. I felt the live performances weren't necessary, while admirably acted. It didn't entirely work for me. The story—and especially Clouzot’s existing footage—is fascinating & intriguing enough to transcend the treatment. Collapse

      The Austin Film Society always brings important, artistic films for screening. Even the Rain is no exception. It is layered, intelligent, and excellently cast and acted with professional actors and local people of Bolivia. A discovered nonactor, Juan Carlos Aduviri, is riviting. Much is happening in this movie. It fluidly moves between past and present in depicting imperialism and the pursuit of money whether it be gold by Columbus, art by the current day filmmakers, or water rights by a corporation (based on the Bolivian Water War in 2000). These are portrayed with epic scenes of the filming of the Columbus/native people saga, the behind the scenes happenings with the current day filmmakers and people of the city, and the uprising and escalating violence of the riots over the water. There are many powerful scenes throughout, which should not be described, but left for the film viewer to see and feel. Very enjoyable, thoughtful movie. Collapse

      Even the Rain is an incredibly moving, gripping story. Featuring Gael Garcia Bernal (from Motorcycle Diaries)as Sebastian, an ambitious filmmaker, Even the Rain is a movie within a movie. It follows Sebastian's efforts in Bolivia to make a movie about Columbus' conquest and exploitation of the natives. When the Bolivian government sells the water supply to a private company, the people see this as pure exploitation, and the surrounding turmoil has eerie parallels with the story Sebastian is telling, and threatens to derail the project. Caught in the midst of this is the fiery actor Daniel, who is a leader of the native resistance in the film, and is a natural leader in real-life in the demonstrations against the social injustice that he sees. Sebastian's determination to push his film through raises some disturbing ethical questions, such as whether his production is contributing to exploitation. If Even the Rain ever comes back, you owe it to yourself to see this. Collapse

      This snapshot of a Palestinian taxi driver and his quest for a birthday cake & gift for his daughter revealed much about daily life there. The script did not shrink from the tragedy that occurs in the region, but treated the viewer to wit, irony, and intelligence in presenting the characters and situations. The bland buildings and piles of rubble next to bulldozers accented the reality of living under occupation. Mohammad Bakri as the taxi driver performed with depth and sensitivity. His frustration is evident throughout the film. Perhaps the only weaknesses were in the stereotypical nature of some of the characters and the predictibility of the ending. All in all, this film will definitely give you a lot to ponder. Collapse
