Armadillo Christmas Bazaar

The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar began as a special event at Austin’s famous Armadillo World Headquarters (AWHQ). The Armadillo World Headquarters was the inspiration or origin of many local icons including Austin City Limits, Threadgills, and the South Austin Museum of Popular Culture, along with the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar.

      I've never really considered myself an arts and crafts person, so I was skeptical of whether I might find anything to like at the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. I found out that there's something for just about everyone at this perennial Austin holiday event. With a little under 200 exhibitors, I was curious as to what I might find. The 2 exhibitors that really stood out for me were Hardwood Creations, which specialized in hand-crafted wooden tables, containers, and game boards, and Iona Handcrafted Books, which produces beautiful hand-crafted journals. Since the Armadillo Music Hall first created Bazaar 36 years ago, live music has been a prominent part of the event as well. When I went on Thursday, December 22nd, the band that I wound up seeing was Warren Hood and the Goods, an enjoyable folk/country band. I was glad that I participated in this uniquely Austin event for the first time this year, and I look forward to perusing it again next year. Collapse

      People who remember the original site and atmosphere of the old bazaar will find the one at Palmer Convention Center slicker, brighter, with admittedly a lot of very talented artists and craftsmen, and with prices higher to match the quality of the offerings. The interior of the Palmer is sparkling and festive, and the music while I was there on Thursday afternoon was superlative. They've traded a certain Austin funkiness for higher taste, so this is a good venue for finding very unusual and lovely things at the last minute - which it is now! Jewelry and paintings were especially nice, but there's also good chocolate, and many odd little animal-shaped toys made of wood, clay, basketry, beads, etc. Some elegant handbags and scarves as well. Happy shopping in the two days that are left! Collapse

Interesting fine art from artists like Yoshi Aoki who works in metal and wood to Greg Delaney aka "Pinman" who's whimsical pins and pendants are a riot. And lots of music - Bodeans, Marcia Ball, Kat Edmonson.....It's the best Holiday event in town. Collapse

      I have to say up front – I LOVE THE ARMADILLO CHRISTMAS BAZAAR! Where else can you shop for the most unusual gifts, listen to the BEST live music, eat and drink (beer, wine, cocktails, soft drinks) – all under one roof? If you’ve never been to the Bazaar, or if it’s been a really long time since your last visit, hurry on down to Palmer Events Center this week. You’ve missed Ruthie Foster, such a GREAT show Sunday, but there’s wonderful music still to come: The Eggmen, Marcia Ball, The Trishas, Hot Club of Cowtown, Warren Hood, Slaid Cleaves, Texana Dames and many more! The artists bring their wares from all over – just to spend 11 days with us here in Austin. There’s fine art (I felt like I was in an art gallery) to jewelry (can’t pass it up!) to décor, hats, bags and wearable art. WHAT are you waiting for?       Having attended the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar for years, I have yet to be disappointed. It is still as great as it ever was. I really enjoyed having it at the Palmer Center this year. The artists and other vendors have such amazing and beautiful products on display, I could have spent days looking around. I figured I was safe, since I had finished all my Christmas shopping, but I should have known that I couldn’t get out of there without buying something. I found the perfect black necklace for myself, right as they were closing down at 11:00 pm. As always, I wished I had planned for more time to look around. However, I had been entranced by Carolyn Wonderland and Shelley King, entertaining us with live music. They had gathered a huge crowd of people both sitting and standing, with several of us dancing around the edges. As each singer has her own band, they each took turns treating us with their best regular songs plus sassy Christmas songs. Happy Holidays and have a blast. Collapse

      My advice for finding some unique gifts is: get some cash, get in your car, and get to the Bazaar.. it is open 11 am to 11pm. While there you will enjoy the sights, the live music, the friendly artists/vendors and some very enjoyable people watching. There is also a nice place to sit down and rest awhile. There are many options for you to find something special for that special person in your life. A short list of items that caught my eye includes: jewelry, original watercolors and oil paintings, fantasy children's books and prints, glass, pottery, handmade paper journals, silk scarfs, fragrances, fun hats made from recycled sweaters. My bottom line advice: don't waste time reading reviews.. get some cash, get in your car, and get to the Bazaar.. it is open 11 am to 11pm. See other reviews IF you must.. but do go enjoy the sights, the live music, the friendly artists/vendors and some enjoyable people watching. There is also a nice place to sit down and rest awhile. There are many options for you to find something special for that special person in your life.       If you haven't experienced the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar it's time to make the annual pilgrimage part of your holiday ritual. This is truly the nicest production of a crafts market in Austin, with some of its best craftspersons and artists. I wished that I had not finished all my holiday shopping after I walked through and surveyed the numerous booths of local artists and crafts persons. Fine arts, glass artists, ceramicists, clothing, chimes, metal workers were all represented here in a very nice presentation that never felt crowded or oppressive. Live music complements the experience nicely. There were a few more importers than I had expected but the quality of the crafts from other lands gave the Bazaar an interesting twist. I found an incredible peacock shawl for half the price of the same item at a mall. My partner found some very reasonably priced hand made pottery. Prices are good, and most of the crafts people are local. Don't miss it. Collapse
