The Long Center for the Performing Arts

The Long Center for the Performing Arts will provide a state-of-the-art venue for a broad array of regional performing arts groups, Texas musicians and a permanent home to the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Austin Lyric Opera and Ballet Austin. Underscoring the Long Center's mission to make the arts accessible to everyone, the facility also includes the AT&T Foundation Education Rooms for community arts education programs, workshops and meetings.

      Ever hear something and really wish you had listened better. I can honestly say I wish I had kept every word that Robert Dubac and his Free-Range Thinking show was one that there was nothing said that did not have some merit of entertainment and information to really make you think. The show went fast for the hour and a half it was on stage. I did not think about missing out on intermission. I found the plot to be one of human life - its hard to explain but can say that when you sit in the audience and experience this wonderful show you will understand. Collapse

      A simple setting with a simple message, Truth. He sipped on a violet shaded drink while communicating through comedy, music, magic, and accents what keeps us from the truth so we can see it ourselves. I felt like a little kid in a new place. Eyes wide open to soak in all the new wonders. I laughed til I cried, and almost cried at the truth of some of his statements. He takes jabs at all the big ones: Religion, Race, Sex, Politics and more. He remains unbiased to all sides poking fun at all things we lightly ignore as socially acceptable and common. "When we say just kidding we're really not". I meant to take notes during the performance but his quick witty and interconnected comments kept me so drawn I didn't touch the notepad once. He uses comedy among other tools to help break barriers and ties we have to certain beliefs so that we may find our truth. Let yourself get mesmerized by this magician of comedy and see it for yourself! Collapse

      Mannheim Steamroller rolled into the Long Center Wednesday night as part of their Christmas Tour. I honestly wish I could review their music separately from the visuals that were projected on a huge screen behind their stage. The music was classic Mannheim: Greensleeves was performed so hauntingly beautiful, I was moved to tears. Many of the other selections were played as expected – true to the versions we hear every Christmas season. HOWEVER – the majority of the videos that accompanied the music were so amateurish, childish and silly – it ruined the overall concert experience. The Little Drummer Boy was turned into a Santa’s Workshop scene – no reference made to the Nativity. The Renaissance pieces had videos that looked like sets made from the worst Ren-Fest costume shop – so distracting from the music. The opening and closing music selections were performed while infomercials of their new and former CDs played on the screen. I still love their music, but not their tour show. Collapse

      Music=5.I have enjoyed CDs for years and was looking forward to the live performance;however,it was not as dynamic as expected.I cannot rate a 5,but will not give the 3 the videos and recorded music(yes,it was there or felt that way)deserve.Found out last night there are several MS touring groups.This one was enjoyable.The variety of instruments and musicians especially the violinist(no programs)were great.The Long Center is a fabulous venue for performance.In another place, I'd say stay home/listen to CDs with full orchestration.The show was disappointing.The poor quality videos were very outdated as if made 30-40 years ago especially when a pair of large, red lips seeming to channel The Rocky Horror Picture Show appeared.One abstract video of the cosmos was mesmerizing.The self promotion CD selling at the beginning of the show and the "how great we are" video of past shows/performances were off-putting.MS has splendid music.That should be the focus.       If the Long Ctr. IS "Austin's Creative Home," its Rollins Theatre was “a game room or a cozy den Wed. nite. The annual Forsyth-Wonderland concert – “Holidays by Candlelight: Fireside Songs for the Soul” – was an engaging, exciting and pleasing mix of blues, rock, folk, big band & country sounds. Guy’s gripping, powerful voice + Carolyn’s wit and Joplinesque vocals, have the solid backing of Jeff Botta (bass, vox), the clowning Oliver Steck (accordion, trumpet, vox, glockenspiel); Rob Hooper (percussion) and Cole El-Saleh (keyboards). Guy and Carolyn play another 6 or 8 instruments. His rousing, raucous harmonica is my favorite, but either easily claims the title “Guitar God/Goddess.” // Many of the songs are wonderfully “re-imagined” by these artists. You hear John Prine “Christmas in Prison;” The Kinks “Father Christmas”, Little Screamin’ Kenny, “I Miss My Nellie Mae.” Wed. was “the longest night of the year.” I wish their merry music-making could have gone on longer.       When The Intergalactic Nemesis Book One - Target Earth was coming back for one night only at the Long Center for the Performing Arts I knew I had to go. This had not been my first time seeing this show. The sci-fi adventure story reminded me of things my parents or grandparents may have seen bits of in old Flash Gordon shorts. The story is laid out two fold. You have the brilliant art work of Tim Doyle telling the story set in 1933 of a news reporter and her side kick and a librarian from the future among other characters that make the time go by so quickly. I was mystified by the wonderful acting and multi voices of the actors Shana Merlin, David Higgins and Christopher Lee Gibson. They acted out their characters as they would if delivering it on a radio station but with so much more zest. The sound effects and musical score helped fill in all the pieces. I can't remember the person who gave the pre show speech but even though it was a tad long it had such heart and passion it was fun Collapse

      This show’s painted backdrop is a view of the universe, because the National Acrobats of China are out of this world. Superlatives are simply inadequate to describe this direct-from-Beijing, award-winning troupe. Thankfully, they finally made it to the U.S. Like the Olympics, the program has impressive opening and closing ceremonies complete with graceful dancing and colorful costumes. Each titled act is fully described in the program – read ahead. Until you actually see 10 dancing women each holding long sticks with 10 spinning plates doing unbelievable tricks like standing on one foot on another person’s head, you can’t appreciate the athleticism. Balance, contortion, grace, strength, and precision coordination are combined to showcase nine more dazzling, acrobatic, tumbling and juggling performances. The Company owns the Institution for Acrobatic Schooling, Training & Repertoire with more than 150 resident performers and 500 students. So expect – and don’t miss -- more U.S. visits. Collapse

      Nope. Not enough positive adjectives in a dictionary to do this acrobatic troupe, diverse program and directors true justice. Seriously. They’re spectacular, incredible, splendid, amazing, beautiful, elegant, enchanting, dazzling, heart-stopping, riveting. Get the idea? I’ll even add inspirational. Surely the Nat’l Acrobats of The People’s Republic of China are its nation’s awesome living treasure. The Beijing-based Company, around since 1950, has toured more than 40 countries, but this is, ironically, its inaugural visit to the U.S. & Canada. There are many stars, all fantastic, attractive athletes, even the clowns who added humor to often startling feats of balance, strength and grace: the 2,000-year-old “Flying Meteors” act, the gravity-challenging hoop tumbles, umbrella juggling, the synchronicity of human pyramids, unbelievable contortionists, bicycle skills with 10 women on one rolling bike, sassy Zhao Hanlong’s bouncing balls hand juggling. Girls Night: The Musical had some great songs including Cry Me a River, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Lady Marmalade, We Are Family, etc. The all female cast did an excellent job, but the production/story was weak/a bit silly/not my cup of tea. However, looking around at other audience members, it was apparently someones' cup of tea. The audience was probably 99.75% female and 66% over the age of 55. They appeared to love it. Collapse
