Rude Mechanicals

Rude Mechanicals is an ensemble-based theatre company founded in Austin in 1995. Since they started, they have produced 22 original theatrical productions, received over 125 nominations for artistic excellence and have been honored as “The Best Theatre Company in Austin” by the Austin Chronicle for a record four consecutive years. They manage The Off Center, create original work in Austin, present the best touring shows in the country, and consistently reach out the community.

      This was my first Rude Mechanicals experience. I had been told they were great, but the show exceeded my high expectations. The plot was fun and fantastical with a pair of Dachshunds as narrators, a wild cat that speaks death metal style, and a sheriff with a fucking foul mouth. The wide variety of music was catchy and, at times, touching. The projected animations usually added to the story and made the experience feel bigger and more sensory. The group advertises the show as something that could only come out of Austin – and by the end of the show, once breakfast tacos got a mention, I agreed. As a side note, I also appreciated the strong female characters and conservation theme. Collapse

      I've never been so happy to live in Austin, where the Rude Mechs put on a great show reaching beyond the limits of much of what we call "theater" now-a-days. The evening's performance oozes beyond the stage, creating a consummate theatrical event which immerses the attendees in a world, rather than just a good story. And what a good story it is! The company has taken its time crafting a raucous, funny, energetic and obscenely original take on the South, the folk tale and decades of musical influences. From the characters and the visual spectacle (which was truly spectacular) onstage, to the Transmedia intermission event, the Rude Mechs lead you on a Wild West ride from start to finish. And what I love about this theater company is that they take full advantage of the power of communal experience. The finale in itself is one of those wonderful moments of theater, where you aren't just an audience member, but a fellow human being in this Wild West ride called life. A must see! Collapse

      The Rude Mechs have done it again! This was an incredible show and left me wondering how I can fit into my schedule a chance to see it again! Kudos to the entire cast and all the musicians. Special shout-out to Jenny Larson and Paul Soileau for completely embodying the characters of the two Dachshunds! This play is a perfect example of the incredible direction that theatre is going in; with multiple layers of media, technology and music that aren't fillers but rather additional characters that move the story forward.       What a crazy play. Don't read any reviews if you are planning on seeing it (which you should!!) It feels (almost) impossible to review the Rude Mech’s newest production/adventure/experience/encounter DIONYSUS IN 69. The experience will be different for each audience member on any given night. And the less you know going in, the better. In fact, if you have already heard about production and are interested, just go see it. Get your ticket and go. Don’t read this. Don’t read any of the other reviews until you’ve seen the play. It’s a performance you will not likely encounter again created by a confident and skilled ensemble. My only two recommendations are wear comfortable (not fancy) clothes and read your program. Or even better, read up on Dionysus. The dialogue can be dense and it’s fun to have handle on the mythology. But this is not a play about dialogue. It is a play about theatre and audience, it is a play about sex and pleasure...       A few favorite images that linger still in my mind: The sexy, hairy, talented Thomas Graves as Dionysus dancing and prancing naked in a state of joyous glee while playing the finger cymbals.... simply magical. The lily-white nude bodies of the Bacchae as they formed two lines for one of the rituals of the play. Several audience members gleefully joining in the dance and play and celebration. A certain long drawn out kiss between two major characters. NOTE: This is definitely a play for mature audiences. Also, dress warmly as the performance space is sparsely heated. If you care to, you might bring a cushion as there are no chairs available—just carpeted floor or platform seating. Go see this outstanding work performed by an outstanding troupe of young actors soon, as you might wish to experience it again before it ends December 20th! Every performance is unique.       The Rude Mechs have done it again. Dionysus is a well executed,thoroughly enjoyable, challenging piece of theatre.The hour and a half passed like it was fifteen minutes. The actors were clearly committed to this entire experience. While I admit for the first few minutes the nudity takes the audience back a bit, it quickly becomes a part of the world of the play. Highly Recommended to all that can handle a bit of off beat theatre. And really, it doesnt get too much better then this. Collapse

      The Method Gun is a semi-fictitious tale of a renowned acting coach loosely based on Stella Adler, the infamous teacher whose students include Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro, and Peter Bogdanovich. She believed that an actor’s real life is the substance to use for performing, rather than simply working mimesis or substitution recall. Life and art are intertwined, as exemplified in this production’s blatant play with fourth wall disappearance/reappearance. . . There is so much wonderful, meaty material in Method Gun for those in the “know.” I mean to say, actors, directors, even writers. It’s about time we start talking about ourselves with all the humor, grace, and passion that the lay-folk may find off-putting. Yes, we do crazy things to manufacture emotions for an audience.
