Blue Lapis Light is a multi-media, site-specific dance company. Using aerial techniques along with classical, interpretive and modern dance movements, performances transcend athleticism to capture a poetry of beauty and a dream of the infinite.

      Devotion by Blue Lapis Light is transcendent in its combination of elements: wall dancing, trapeze and bungee flight, ballet, rowers upon water in ritual approach – all immersed in light, sound, and video. Sally Jacques has again blessed Austin with imaginative site-specific aerial dance. “Devotion” is for the Earth’s water but the main attraction is the art deco intake building with ten windows, ten bays, and pipes that seemed to anticipate a body’s rest and suspension. With Austin’s skyline proudly in your right visual field, be caressed by site-specific lake shore breezes; view dramatic aerial plunges, roof-top ballet silhouettes and film images pouring through distant windows. Bring your binoculars. A naked eye may not see the subtlety of some ballet and aerial moves. Devotion has moments of less interesting stationary pose, but it is still a senatorial feast of beauty and athleticism. Thanks to Sally Jacques for her vision and its technical execution. Collapse

      For years Blue Lapis Light has performed spectacular aerial dances as a conversation in movement with Austin's architecture. Last year they hung down from the Long Center's columns like spiders--this year, dancers bounce off the walls of an old power plant building on Lady Bird Lake and flip around their bungee harnesses in front of light projections in the windows. Gondolas lit by soft lights enter from under the railroad bridge to deliver the dancers to their places--but that's about as exciting as it gets. Often the dancers' movements weren't big enough to see clearly from across the water, although if I were swinging around concrete, I'd be cautious, too. The best part of experiencing Devotion, however, is the setting. The city lights glimmer on the water and off of the sparkles on the dancers' costumes. Cars rush by on Cesar Chavez unaware that such a graceful, beautiful dance is nearby. So take an hour to escape the rush and stress of the city, and definitely bring the family. Collapse

      'One' has "Wow!" factor to spare - dancers make their away up, down, around, and through the air of the Long Center pavilion with a display of athleticism which at times can leave you breathless. The mid-air "ribbon" dances were stunning, as was a section of sculptural dance/gymnastics/balancing on the ring performed by the two male dancers. I loved how the human body seemed so light at times, and then so heavy (the ribbon dancers do a fantastic sudden drop which you just have to see, really.) I had some problems with the tone of the show - the music, the "thematic" dances, the slow pace - tended to be very heavy and dramatic which grew a bit monotonous and repetitive. The best moments in the show featured a contrast between the music and the motion -- dancers relaxed-ly dangling their toes off the ring while dramatic music plays, silence during an amazing feat. But these moments were outnumbered by BIG DRAMA motion with BIG DRAMA music. All in all, great performances though! Collapse

      This performance was beautiful, touching, and amazing. It's hard to believe that a group of dancers can do what these women and men did. Costumes beautiful, music inspiring, lighting wonderful, and the difficult and dangerous feats performed and graceful choreography and its execution by the troupe is astounding. Spectacularly beautiful and touching tribute performance. Collapse
