Paramount Theatre

The Paramount Theatre has a rich history, having been a home to vaudeville, silent movies, "talkies," music, dance, and Broadway shows for the last 90 years. This venue is one of the few theatres that still exist out of the 1,200 theatres that were designed by John Eberson of Chicago in the early 1900s. Today, the theatres offers theatrical performances of all kinds for viewers of all ages, including a Broadway series of plays and a children's series featuring works such as Charlotte's Web, The Wizard of Oz, and The Velveteen Rabbit.

    History, Ghosts, & Legends: Paramount Theatre Tour Paramount Theatre History, Ghosts, & Legends: Paramount Theatre Tour Presented by Paramount Theatre at Paramount Theatre January 19, 2011 - Ongoing HISTORY ISN'T ALWAYS FOUND IN BOOKS. SOMETIMES IT'S FOUND IN THE RAFTERS... That's exactly what was discovered in the empty theatre as the stage was being cleaned. One inadvertent pull on some rigging slowly lowered into view the original 1915, hand-painted, asbestos fire curtain. It had been hanging, forgotten for over 50 years. In near perfect condition, its pastoral scene painted by Toomey and Volland in St. Louis is just one more story behind the history of the Paramount...

      I always enjoy my theatre trips that take me to the Paramount Theatre. There is no theatre in Austin or pretty much rest of the state that matches the history and beauty of theatre. In seeing the play "Doubt" one is taken through the riggers of a Catholic School in 1964 and questions of morality that are even more needed today than I am sure they were discussed back then. The set was modest and the lighting was conventional. The cast was small, four people but they held their own in a story telling that had no intermission which did wear a bit as the second half of the play wore on. The plot is a simple one layered in questions. The catholic priest who has taken an interest in a boy that no one else likes may have done something but there is no proof, only suspicion and the acts of the people surrounding it. Suzy Hunt as Sister Aloysius and Brendan Shanahan as Father Flynn were spellbinding and I don't ever use that word. They carried the show as their characters are slated to do. Bravo. Collapse

      Furious fortissimos from tympanic overlords resounded throughout the Paramount Saturday evening as ScrapArtsMusic ruled the stage. Their many intriguing instruments often looked to be a product of both Buck Rogers and Dr. Seuss. As I received the designer and composer’s autograph on my ScrapArtsMusic CD, Gregory Kozak admitted to being a junkyard junkie. “I like to reuse and recycle”, he claimed. The percussion instruments may be largely recycles but the compositions, rhythmic performance elements and sheer enthusiasm displayed are decidedly NOT! The nearly constant, pulse enforcing, foot stomping beats with overlayers of polyrhythms and instrument sharing was very well choreographed and executed. One exception was a small Sabian cymbal that, after being mercilessly and repeatedly pounded, could stand no more. With a building tension of surrender, it finally splashed onto the stage floor. Well, maybe they meant to do that because it worked. It all worked. Collapse

      I admit it – I’m a closet-percussionist. I saw ScrapArtsMusic at the Paramount Theater Saturday night, and they rocked the house! The five-person, percussion group from Canada put on an amazing, high-energy show. Gregory Kozak (who founded the group in 1998 with Justine Murdy), not only wrote the music for the show – but he also designed and built all of the museum-quality instruments from scrap – hence the name: ScrapArtsMusic. The pieces are multi-functional: most of the drums could be played on the head and then flipped in their frames to play the shells and bottoms, while other pieces were made from artillery shells, wood planks, PVC pipes, flexible tubing and even balloons. An ethereal piece, Magnum Opus for Bowls and Plates, was played entirely on metal bowls and aluminum plates – so hauntingly beautiful. The fast-paced finale was such a blur of mallets, sticks, muscles and a twirling mini-skirt – it’s a wonder the five of them were able to stand during the applause! Collapse

      The opener Quiet Company made the place uncomfortable with their emo-Christian music, and the singer was pitchy, having trouble hitting the notes. The guys jumped around on stage like Green Day. This would be ok at a small venue or bar, playing for teens and early 20-somethings who will buy into it, but not at the Paramount on New Years Eve where Bob's listeners are mainly in their 30's, 40's, and 50's. After several songs, I simply couldn't take the same uber sensitive and repetitive songs about girls and Jesus, and made my way out to the lobby, where I met half of the audience with the same opinion. Bob came on at 10:30pm and played a lot of his new John Mayer copy stuff. There were some amazing songs that sounded like his old band The Scabs...hip hop infused and lyrically open and ballsy. His band is amazing and it was FINALLY great to see them let loose on New Years Eve. The musicians up there were top notch. The tickets should have been $20. Bob's good, but $80 was too much.       That would be Joe Sears and Jaston Williams living in A Tuna Christmas. If you have not yet joined the Tuna Nation, it is time to do so. The clever and touching portrayal of the many citizens to Tuna Texas is uproariously funny and a great value for your entertainment dollar. You can try to figure out how they change costumes so quickly. If you have seen it before, maybe you will be like my seatmate who was quoting along and laughing in anticipation of fondly remembered familiar gags. It is always a joy to see your favorite Tuna characters back on stage in Austin; it is, it is. Collapse

      What do I love about the holidays? It’s a time to re-connect with family and friends – especially the crazy members of a little town called Tuna, TX. Joe Sears and Jaston Williams bring the characters to life – all 22 of them – in this year’s run of A Tuna Christmas playing at the Paramount. It’s time to check in with all of our favorites: Vera, Petey, DiDi (God _ _….you know the rest), Helen and Inita, Pearl and Bertha. The Christmas Phantom is wrecking the yard displays of the community, and it’s up to you to guess who, as we drop by Radio Station OKKK, the Tastee Kreme, DiDi’s Used Weapons (If We Can’t Kill It – It’s Immortal), Bertha’s and Vera’s homes. Joe and Jaston throw one-liners and zingers so fast, we’re kept laughing and clapping with each scene. But the true magic is created as we become so involved in their performance – we soon forget that the simple set has only a few minor changes from scene to scene.       The Paramount Theatre’s Classic Film Series opened last Friday night, with guest speaker Peter Bogdonovich offering a wealth of oral history about the golden age of American filmmaking. The evening promised a double bill: Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, and To Have and Have Not, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. The evening had the excitement and buzz of a major gala event, without the glitter. Bogdonovich, best known directorially for his films The Last Picture Show and Paper Moon, is also one of the most celebrated authors on the subject of American Cinema. Both films – Casablanca and To Have and Have Not were enhanced to Godlike status while viewing within the splendor of the Paramount Theatre. To see these amazing films within a beautiful, large, architecturally pleasing theatre is an incomparable experience. Do not miss out on seeing classic film at the Paramount this summer; once you go, you will wonder why you haven’t gone before! Collapse

      Those of you holding your breath that the State Theatre would not make a comeback after the devastating city water main break in 2006 can now breathe a sigh of relief. It served the recent SXSW film fest well and attendees at the “P.S. Networking Bash” this past Thursday seemed to enjoy the look-see-explore-networking event. The music (mixed by Glitoris), the Alison Narro Photography, the thermos mug + coffee, free beer, wine and popcorn, and the blogger/social networker card with exclusive theatre benefits for the next year made it a “party-plus.” The 1935 Art Deco movie house, which got a $3.5 million refurb in ’98 to accommodate theatre productions, has undergone $300,000 in repairs with another $250,000 set by the end of summer. The stage and basement had been flooded, ruining equipment, seating, dressing rooms and the stage. Beyond cleaning, repair and replacement, fire-safety systems were upgraded and the stage and sound booth were rebuilt. (more) Collapse

      Perhaps my expectations were too high, and reviewing a party is a bit different from reviewing a performance. But I came away from this experience a bit perplexed. The party mood was there with several hundred excited people attending and networking. The first 500 received a Paramount travel mug with a bag of Kohana coffee inside. And those “partygoers” in attendance who were able to take photos and tweet had an opportunity to win tickets to see Craig Ferguson at the Paramount. Nice choices of wine and beer, but vino and popcorn? Vino and (for sale) Hey Cupcake? In my nearly two hours of wandering about the two historic and highly contrasting venues, I somehow missed hearing any announcements about the Summer Film Series and the reopening of the State Theatre – now Stateside at the Paramount. I did enjoy a brief talk by film projectionist John Stewart, on the job since 2000. Collapse

      Grupo Fantasma has long been known as one of Austin's premiere live acts and has emerged into national and international acclaim. The historic Paramount was a classy, comfortable venue for their show, and YES! they let the audience dance in the aisles! Grupo's successful touring schedule means that they only get to play in their home town infrequently, and the chance to experience their infectious music should not be missed. Collapse
