      Arcadia (or Lady Chatter’s Lovers?) by Austin Shakespeare. Coitus Interruptus seemed to be the usual method. Chater’s wife, Cloe', Thomasina and Lady Croom must have been truly frustrated. Onan wasn’t too keen on the sister-in-law, but Bernard finds sisters grand. These characters never seem to be able to consummate their passions: for math, gardening or Byron’s history. And it seems for each other. It’s all vaguely dissatisfying. But it is a true masterpiece of theater, brilliant and disturbing. There is some brilliant acting to go along with it. The problem with the star system is that the very personality that makes them remarkable, prevents them from truly portraying their character. This is a consummation devoutly to be wished. This is an incredible journey of discovery (its true meaning) for the audience and the actors. Great theater. You owe it to yourself to watch this play. Collapse

      I knew if I was seeing Tom Stoppard's Arcadia that I was in for a long evening. I knew that I had not seen this production and would only see it once and knew that I could only trust Austin Shakespeare to do it right. The set worked so well and lighting just to set off the ability to cover two very different time periods at the same time. The story takes place half the time in 1809 and rest in the present. You really need to pay attention because there is so much that is said and at times it is a lot of dialogue and clever use of this dialogue but you have to keep your ear glued every moment. The acting was taken by a wide range of actors and actresses and found that after seeing them do Superman that I am holding non Shakespeare pieces to a high standard. Gwendolyn Kelso was so much fun to watch as Lady Croom and Michael Dalmon as Ezra Chater was so funny and alive. Sadly these characters were not on stage long. I enjoyed the show for what it was and hope that if you see it-be awake. Collapse

      This was my first introduction to a live performance of Shakespeare, so I might be a little bias. I loved the show! The three hour run time was off putting at first, but I was surprised at how the time flew by. I am no expert in Shakespeare but I believe the actors pulled their roles off wonderfully. Helen Merino’s acting reminds me of a younger Emma Thompson, and that is a very good thing. Her performance as Hamlet was quite enjoyable to watch and I thought she conveyed the madness, humor and pain of the character very well. Scott Shipman and Chelsea Duvall were also wonderful as Polonius and Ophelia. I look forward to seeing this and other plays by Austin Shakespeare. Collapse

      Austin does not have to worry about where the next generation of actors is coming from – it is here – performing Shakespeare at the Curtain Theater and doing a very good job of it! The audience can feel the enthusiasm the young people bring to the stage. They are doing a great job – some of the veterans deserve special mention, among them Georgia McLeland (Thersites), Tess Kichuk (Pandarus) and Kelsey Hockmuller (Cassandra / Ulysses)) The outdoor setting is very nice (and fits the play) – even though there are times when the actors have to compete with motor noises (boats?) If you have not seen it – hurry up and go while you have the chance – it is well worth it! Collapse

      I did not know what to expect for Love's Labour's Lost at Zilker Park. I must admit that having only seen the film version which I did not enjoy there was mixed hope that I would find myself in a boring or sugar coated play. I knew with many of the actors and actresses that I had seen on stage in other productions that was not going to happen. I was not prepared for seeing by me my favorite total cast production of a story that seemed to find heart and purpose and character development from top to bottom. Molly Karrasch as the page so made me laugh with every turn. It was so good to see her as another character deliver the sorrowful message towards plays end. Kim Adams, as in Man and Superman, owns whatever stage she is on. Her total commitment to a character is such a joy to see. The setting of summer of 1963 was such the way to go. The innocence of the period about to be brought to an end. Many great performances from so many others. I am truly grateful for this production. Collapse

      Whatever you think about Shakespeare, there is something magical about a writer who can span so many generations. Thanks to Robert Faires, we can enjoy yet another well thought out concept just perfect for the summer. Go have some fun and see how cleverly he has brought this lesser of the Shakespeare's to life. You will not be disappointed. Some marvelous performances and such a dedicated company. Go get some Love at Zilker. Bring some wine and song. Collapse
