      This was my first introduction to a live performance of Shakespeare, so I might be a little bias. I loved the show! The three hour run time was off putting at first, but I was surprised at how the time flew by. I am no expert in Shakespeare but I believe the actors pulled their roles off wonderfully. Helen Merino’s acting reminds me of a younger Emma Thompson, and that is a very good thing. Her performance as Hamlet was quite enjoyable to watch and I thought she conveyed the madness, humor and pain of the character very well. Scott Shipman and Chelsea Duvall were also wonderful as Polonius and Ophelia. I look forward to seeing this and other plays by Austin Shakespeare. Collapse

      Austin does not have to worry about where the next generation of actors is coming from – it is here – performing Shakespeare at the Curtain Theater and doing a very good job of it! The audience can feel the enthusiasm the young people bring to the stage. They are doing a great job – some of the veterans deserve special mention, among them Georgia McLeland (Thersites), Tess Kichuk (Pandarus) and Kelsey Hockmuller (Cassandra / Ulysses)) The outdoor setting is very nice (and fits the play) – even though there are times when the actors have to compete with motor noises (boats?) If you have not seen it – hurry up and go while you have the chance – it is well worth it! Collapse

      I did not know what to expect for Love's Labour's Lost at Zilker Park. I must admit that having only seen the film version which I did not enjoy there was mixed hope that I would find myself in a boring or sugar coated play. I knew with many of the actors and actresses that I had seen on stage in other productions that was not going to happen. I was not prepared for seeing by me my favorite total cast production of a story that seemed to find heart and purpose and character development from top to bottom. Molly Karrasch as the page so made me laugh with every turn. It was so good to see her as another character deliver the sorrowful message towards plays end. Kim Adams, as in Man and Superman, owns whatever stage she is on. Her total commitment to a character is such a joy to see. The setting of summer of 1963 was such the way to go. The innocence of the period about to be brought to an end. Many great performances from so many others. I am truly grateful for this production. Collapse

      Whatever you think about Shakespeare, there is something magical about a writer who can span so many generations. Thanks to Robert Faires, we can enjoy yet another well thought out concept just perfect for the summer. Go have some fun and see how cleverly he has brought this lesser of the Shakespeare's to life. You will not be disappointed. Some marvelous performances and such a dedicated company. Go get some Love at Zilker. Bring some wine and song. Collapse

      Come ready to listen. Because while "Austin Shakes" may be taking a break from the Bard with "Man and Superman", the company has not given up its trademark: plays powered by Language. As in Shakespeare, Shavian characters are burning with big passions and ideas, which they effortlessly articulate into speeches that sizzle with searing insight and wit. So while Director Ann Ciccolella does spice things up with onstage video - (Jennifer Madison provides classy costumes, Aaron Bell a flexible set, and Jason Amato textured lighting) - for me, the greatest pleasures of this production were not what I saw, but what I heard. And that was a very capable cast (led by Shelby Davenport's Jack and including some talented musicians) teasing out the timeless truth that Love will have its way with us... despite how much we may protest!       Austin Shakespeare's "Man & Superman" was the first Shaw play I saw, and it was a good experience. It is packed with Shaw's philosophical ponderings on such things as a "Superman"- a Neitzchean term for one who follows his own moral code rather than society's- and the function of marriage in society. In a nutshell, the plot involves John Tanner, a social iconoclast (and personification of the "Superman" idea in this story) who has one Ann Whitfield as his ward. Octavius Robinson Ann's suitor, though we find out that Ann has plans of her own, throwing the social expectation on its head. I can't detail all the themes and sub-themes of the story, or of all the aspects of the productions I enjoyed. I do want to mention Shelby Davenport, whose mellifluous voice and precise and command of the role helped to make it a successful production. Kimberley Barrow is excellent as Ann, and Philip Kreyche not only gives a solid performance in the role of Tavy, but has is a solid singer as well. Bravo! Collapse
