Way Off Broadway Community Players (WOBCP) is an all-volunteer, nonprofit corporation, located in Leander, Texas, dedicated to the establishment of a living arts theatre. Through this theatre, they hope to promote the educational, cultural, and literary growth of the city, county, and state.

      WOBCP has a farce in the house: First Things First, directed by veteran, Ed Trujillo. Friends Pete (Eric Daniels) and George (Casey Weed - SUCH a scene-stealer!) plan to have a visit at Pete’s flat – however they first have to ensure that Pete’s wife, Sarah is out for the evening. Caitlin Sullivan as Sarah suspects that Pete is up to something, so she feigns a sprained ankle to try and catch him. The game’s afoot when George arrives to inform Pete that his first wife, Jessica is alive and well - after an 18-month absence and presumed dead - and is on her way to the flat to “consummate their reunion”. Add to the mix Sarah’s mother, Margo, and the lies begin to fly as soon as they can be spoken! Poor George has gone from a bearer of news to being married? And he never knew he was? Who gets Pete, what happens to George and WHO is Alan? These and other questions are answered – but WHAT a reveal! Come and see for yourself, but hurry, there’s only one more weekend to see, First Things First! Collapse

      The Way Off Broadway Community Player’s latest show, The Kitchen Witches, opens with tasty tidbits of “local” KWOB programming playing on off-stage monitors. Director Ed Trujillo has creatively used the setting, a cable access station’s rival cooking queens, to his advantage. By using the live camera shoot, we see the show not only from our seats in the audience, but also what the “home viewers” would be seeing if the show were truly broadcast. Shelly Kelly and Barb Jernigan shine as the Witches – each having a very different viewpoint in the kitchen. As one show ends its broadcast and a new show is hatched, the plot comes to a boil at the end of Act 1 and we learn some very important information key to the on-going rivalry. You’re taking a chance if you leave the interior of the theater during intermission; you’ll miss more of Trujillo’s creative use of the company’s actors, or even be caught up in the show itself. Come and to taste what WOBCP has to offer, before it’s all gone! Collapse

      Way Off Broadway Community Players’ version of The Tender Trap is going strong in Leander. A few minutes prior to the opening, a crooner comes in and performs a short night-club act - strolling through the audience, greeting patrons as they are being seated - setting the mood for New York in the ‘50’s. We have a swinging bachelor pad, a revolving door of beautiful women making their intentions well known, and a married friend going through a mid-life crisis – what could go wrong, right? Will Charlie Reader, played by Gary Dean Hamilton, get caught in the tender trap? Will he settle down with Sylvia (Hanna Haide) or young Miss Julie (Shae Voellmann), will buddy Joe (Michael Costilla) stay faithful to his wife and kids? SNAP! Who’s caught? The actors and crew have done an amazing job on the set (hey, it’s called COMMUNITY theater for a reason…everyone pitches in), and kudos to the special scene painted by Alex Villareal – make sure you sit in the center or to the right of the stage!       A delightful comedy with bickering siblings, a nosy sister, and a surprise twist at the end. Also, a little heart tug when both "the senator" and Philip learn of the forthcoming event. Tamara Friedman, in her first appearance at WOBCP, is delightful as the leading lady with a surprise. Rina Lee must have chicken soup running in her veins as the believable Jewish nosy sister. Bradley Wood and Misty Barham nearly steal the show as the bickering siblings. You'll laugh and laugh and maybe learn a little Yiddish! Collapse

      The play takes place in a CIA Safe House somewhere in the Mountains of Virginia. The set is an enchanting, comfortable lodge with a fantastic fireplace with a gentle glow, a nice variety of wall hangings, a well-stocked liquor cabinet, and the requisite bear rug and deer antlers. The ongoing sounds of rain help to set the context of the story and make the scene feel cozier. The play begins with someone breaking into the house by climbing through the working windows with a flashlight, all to the well-recognized tunes of “Secret Agent Man.” Although the play is a farce, it is also a mystery. Which of the characters is actually the representative that they are waiting to meet? The negotiations have been so secret, that the main characters don’t know if it will be a male or female. See if you can figure it out before the answer is revealed to you. Collapse

      WOBCPs latest production, Sin, Sex, and the C.I.A., had the audience laughing within the first seconds of opening. The show revolves around a plot to begin oil-rights negotiations with unknown representatives from The Islands of Chagos and several government agencies. A raging rainstorm brings a few drop-in guests – but are they really just guests – or is one of them the unknown rep from Chagos? James Lee Burke and Kirsten Schulte almost steal the show as they portray the pompous Reverend Abernathy and his innocent secretary, Millicent. Ed Trujillo, as bumbling C.I.A. agent Luke James, manages to find a way to get caught by every “trap” he sets to protect the safe house. I lost count after six! You don’t want to miss Millicent learning the art of seduction – we should all be so lucky as to have Cynthia Carrier as Heather Faraday for an instructor. Drive on up to Leander soon – before the show is over – and see if you can guess the real rep from The Chagos Island! Collapse

      Slapstick comedy, great gags & stunts, and funny dialog. Kirsten Schulte steals the show as she takes "seduction" lessons to the tunes of "Baby Elephant Walk." Very funny!

      I have long been curious about the Way Off Broadway Community Players in Leander. I finally braved the drive to check out a Sunday matinee production of “Your Flake or Mine.” Ed Trujillo directed the farce, and it is full of laughs, and actors with significant emotional range. It is not every play that shows a man truly in love with a woman, also laughing outrageously at his own jokes, and later weeping openly in front of his friends. The story is engaging, and the poetic couplets that the characters recite - seemingly by accident - are quite fun. You will be very entertained by the unique plot, the flattering outfits for the females, and the way the women slosh their martinis across the stage. It is set in LA in 1975, and I would love a copy of the 70's style soundtrack that helped to set the mood for the play and played between acts. Although the set is convincing as a run-down apartment, the venue is quite lovely, and with the most comfortable chairs. Go out and enjoy yourself! Collapse
