      Tough to watch musicals where the singing isn't top notch. Lots of humorous moments were passed over. Tough to watch shows where the actors are asking for "approval" or laughter. A bit overproduced. The strength is in simple staging...not so here. And why 3 mutes. The one mute is supposed to be one of the funniest characters in the play. Not so here. Great costumes. Great lighting. Nice set. Above all, you can't argue with good writing and that is the best thing about The Fantasticks. Collapse

      More than mid-way through Friday evening in Bass Concert Hall, Francoise Mouly, the New Yorker’s deft art editor, flashed a cartoon panel onto the screen behind her which bore the sentence, “And remember: it’s only lines on paper, folks!!” For Robert Crumb and Art Spiegelman, the comic artists sitting to either side of Mouly, it would seem this line couldn’t be further from the truth. For these icons of icon-making, who touched on censorship, alienation, and the illustrating of religious texts during the evening, comics were much more than just “lines on paper.” Opening the presentation, which felt more like an intimate after-dinner conversation among friends, Mouly noted that the posters advertising the event had promised a “helluva time.” Looking to Crumb, dressed in a suit and tan sandals with black socks, and Spiegelman, who gently chain-smoked through the evening, she said, “I hope you two can live up to that.” The bar was set high; they rose to meet it.       I absolutely LOVE THIS SHOW! The excellent script, superb music and lyrics, combined with a talented cast to produce a fully enjoyable experience. The story is very relevant today as we watch an individual standing up for what she believes in, even in the face of threats from enemies, and persuasion from well-meaning friends. In addition, it provides the back-story to "Wizard of Oz" and haven't you always wondered where the Tin Man and Cowardly Lion came from? Elphaba had positive intentions behind her actions, yet she was misinterpreted and not appreciated. She regrets this in her number, "No Good Deed." My favorite number is the love song, "As Long as You're Mine" which brings tears to my eyes. The show is so empowering for women. I love how it depicts the reality of female friendships. Even though they cannot understand each other's choices, they accept them in the song, "Defying Gravity." Unlike strong women in most Hollywood movies, both witches experience a happy ending.
