One World Theatre

ABOUT ONE WORLD THEATRE

One World Theatre is an intimate 300 seat venue nestled in the hills of West Austin. Showcasing an eclectic mix of world-renowned performers, One World Theatre is as unique as the artists they present. A premiere performing arts venue, One World Theatre is committed to showcasing terrific diversity in music and dance.

Built in 1999, every aspect of One World Theatre was built out of respect and appreciation for the natural habitat and a desire to preserve and restore our planet's resources. Utilizing ecologically sound building techniques and design, the Tuscan style walls of the theatre are constructed of Rastra - recycled computer packaging and other Styrofoam products with concrete - and the office walls are straw bale. Solar paneling and a drip irrigation water system, along with the energy efficient construction methods dramatically reduce the consumption of our natural resources.

One World Theatre is home to One World Non Profit, Austin’s largest multicultural arts-in-education outreach that has served over 1 million school children since its inception in 1993. One World Non Profit’s mission is to inspire an appreciation of world cultures by educating youth through participation in a diversity of art forms from around the world.

      I went to the One World Theater last night to hear Bob Schneider (after paying $65/ticket!) and heard him perform only about 1/3 of the show, which was Christmas music only. He made the comment early in the show that he is not a fan of Christmas music. That was obvious. The other 2/3 of the show was performed by 3 other musicians, and the Austin Girls's Choir. The show was incredibly slow and boring - not the fun Lonelyland or Scabs music that I expected. I was surprised that the show was billed as "Bob Schneider", when in fact it was just a Christmas variety show. I'm hesitant to visit One World Theater again, in case they try this "bait and switch" scheme one more time. On a positive note, the piano player was incredibly talented - I would have left content if he had been the solo act. Collapse

      On Friday, June 18, I had the pleasure to experience the Cowboy Junkies at One World Theatre. It was an evening of two firsts. My first concert at One World Theatre and my first Cowboy Junkies concert. Although it was the second show of the evening - an a warm evening indeed - the theatre was packed with adoring fans. The lead singer admitted she was a little wilted and the set was largely comprised of slower, darker songs, but it was still a treat. A painter created an abstract of the flowers that surrounded the lead singer, which caused her to remark that Austin was now the prize winner for flower arrangements. The only downside was the couple, new to Austin, who sat in front of me and talked nonstop throughout the concert. I hate that. Heard an interview the next morning with the Junkies on NPR and learned a lot about the album, Renmen Park, they are promoting. I plan to buy it. Collapse

      As a long time fan of Cowboy Junkies, I was looking forward to this show, especially in the One World theater, Austins most intimate concert venue. I didn't see the first show, but have to agree that the sound check was way off. I couldn't hear the vocals clearly during the first half of the show,and didn't much care for the first songs performed. During her older more familiar songs, and a couple of new ones, Margot's voice was as haunting and eerie as ever, but her voice did seem to lack some energy. I loved watching an painting unfold to completion by the end of show though which was a nice touch from One World Theater. Two shows in a night this time around, might have been too much. I felt a lot of sympathy for Margot. Road tours for any performer must be hard at times, especially for those pushing 50! Collapse

      One World Theater is a great space for an intimate performance event.I'd definitely go there again though this 2nd show by the Cowboy Junkies was not a totally enjoyable experience.At the end of the show,the vocalist described it as gloomy;not upbeat like their first.Having not been to the 1st show,I have to agree it was mournful.Also,I could barely hear the singer.Her voice was hidden under the music.Sound check should have caught this.6-7 songs in,I saw a band member gesture to the soundboard man-resulting in a slight change vocally.Having never heard them before,I could not understand the lyrics except on quieter songs where her soulful voice could be appreciated and the lyrics understood.(The audience appeared to be fans who knew the words--makes for a difference experience.)Most of the time the music was intriguing with harmonica and various instrument combinations; however,sometimes the guitar based sections were just chaotic noise.I did go to their website&listen-I'd add a star.       Craig Chaquico began the evening at One World Center with guitar driven contemporary jazz. Though often inspired by nature, the sound Friday night had, from the beginning, strong overtones of Starship and Led Zeppelin. This jazz, especially Chaquico’s guitar, was more “hot” than “cool.” Even his guitar transposition of Kenny G’s “Songbird” was more blazing “firebird” than soaring seagull. Chaquico’s virtuoso guitar, as well as his occasional forays on the Beamz (which uses six laser beams to make music) was enhanced by the amazing versatility of Bill Silas on keyboard and saxophone. Wade Olson on drums and Jim Reitzel on bass guitar kept the groove rock-solid throughout the performance. (At least, I think that’s who his sidemen were.) In the second half, Chaquico overtly revisited his Starship days. Rolf Hartley joined his bandmates with powerful lead vocals and additional guitar. Hartley could teach Adam Lambert volumes about no-holds-barred, full-out singing. Collapse

      Energetic is just one word that describes these band members and their love of performing. They were having fun playing, singing, and dancing. The audience was filled with fans singing and moving in their seats to the end of the show when most were up dancing and cheering. The music was a mix of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, and a touch of jazz. The band was terrific. The vocals and harmonies were smooth when you could hear them. I enjoyed this show. My only reason for not giving 5 stars is that much of the time the wonderful horns and other instruments were louder than the vocals. I really love to hear the words and great singing voices not covered over by the band. Given that--the Tower of Power show was a lot of fun. Collapse

      Keiko Matsui is in her prime. As an artist she has developed a confidence that only comes with a mastery of instrument and her band. Her attack of the keyboards is pure feminine strength mixed with a subtlety and mood that one can only describe as magical. While smooth jazz is not always my favorite, I found Keiko's tunes honest and interesting, with a gift for drama that builds. She has an amazing band and her dialogue with her sax player was made in heaven. It seems like every show I attend at One World is better than the last from the stunning local guest artists that serenade you in the lobby before the show to the wonderful lighting effects that really make the artists shine. We were treated to a live painting by Cuban artist Rolando Diaz, a collaboration that delights the jazz artists as well as the audience. Keiko has some great stories as well from her world travels as one of jazz's top artists. Just a delight! Don't miss her next time she's in town. She loves Austin. Collapse

      He comes onto the stage dressed in his signature African style tunic, long beard & mellow peace- loving aura, sits down, plunks around on the guitar til he launches into his also-signature rhythm style playing, creating a full sound. His thumb reaches across the guitar neck like a capo and he plays with incredible ease. His 69 year old voice is still there in stellar form although I craved throughout the show to hear it more. The mic was too far from him or maybe he purposely sat back but I wanted to hear it more clearly. When he did a bit of acapella singing in an encore it sounded fantastic. The small but appreciative crowd drunk him up and stood on the ovation. He would occasionally chat in between songs but overall he rambled a bit in the chatting & in the songs. It wasn't clean. It was his 2nd show of the night so perhaps he was a bit tired. His sit-in lead guitarist kept up with Richie's improv style nicely. I saw him in 2001 here and he was stellar. This didn't quite measure up. Collapse
