Different Stages

Founded in 1980 as the Small Potatoes Theatrical Company, Different Stages was given its current name in 1984 when its founders incorporated the organization as a nonprofit organization. They have produced numerous plays from romantic to neo-classic to realistic to surrealistic and has been committed to the performance not only of famous works but of lesser-known plays as well.

      Destroyed by slander or undone by those too willing to believe without facts or proof, this is all too real in the world we live in today. The actors were credible and convincing, but at times, a little too faint to hear easily. The costuming and set conveyed the time period for this chilling drama, which is well done and is worth seeing. Collapse

      The Children's Hour is an incredible exposition of the evil that can be perpetrated by a mind that has no sense of right or wrong. The ability of Mary to manipulate her Grandmother and classmates is horrendous. Mary is like an evil chess mistress, always one step ahead of her opponents, who, of course, play by the normal rules of society. Her classmates are defenseless against Mary's manipulations; the only ones who understand her evil are her grandmother's maid, her teachers and Dr. Bob. However, they are outplayed by this young lady, without morality or scruples. People who enjoy dark suspense dramas will enjoy both the play and its performance. The acting is very credible and with have you completely involved as the tragic story unfolds. This play is not recommended for children or people looking for light-hearted entertainment. Another excellent production by Different Stages. Thanks for bringing Austin thoughtful productions. Collapse

      Although the title of this play may suggest that it is appropriate for children, it's not. This is definitely a play for mature audiences only. The story is about a horrible little girl who tells a horrible lie that destroys the lives of all the primary adult characters. It's a great story by the playwright Lillian Hellman, who also wrote Little Foxes. The play is long - two and a half hours with two intermissions. The actors do a good job. From the program you can see that they are all experienced performers, and one actor has actually performed this same play before, albeit another character. There seemed to be a problem or two opening night with sound and lighting, but nothing that interfered with the enjoyment of play. Overall, it was a good show and a good value. Don't miss it.       I attended the opening night performance of Different Stages' production of Lillian Hellman's "The Children's Hour" at the City Theater. I went originally because a friend and ex-co-worker had a small (but important) role in it. Quite simply - I was blown away! I knew very little about Hellman's play from the 1930's - and had some fear that I would find it a bit dated. My fears were groundless. This play is as relevant today as it was when first staged - touching on such timely issues as bullying and coming out. But more than that, it delves deeply into some very complex psychological issues, as well-developed characters struggle with the matters that arise during the play. And what can I say about the actors? Of course, everyone probably gives 200% on opening night - but I was literally moved to tears by the pathos that the lead characters evoked in me through their extremely well-rehearsed roles. The whole audience was on its feet at the end. This is a MUST see! Collapse

      Lillian Hellman was a fearless playwright, and this classic isn't produced often enough (my opinion). It's a timeless lesson that bears repetition: Words do hurt, words can destroy, and little sparks are sometimes potential wildfires. Different Stages is consistent here by delivering us a classic play without butchering it or trying to make it "contemporary", or anything that it isn't. Everything the artists need is right there in the text. That's what I like best about Different Stages. They never add or subtract from the playwright's intentions. These characters are like everyone else: Garden-variety human beings with mostly good intentions and decent values. A few lies and their worlds are changed forever. "Thou shalt not lie" doesn't differentiate between "little lies", "white lies", whatever names we attach to them. It's a straightforward commandment, and here we see the full consequences of good intentions manipulated by twisted tongues. This is some great theatre. Don't miss it Collapse

      This show is a lot of fun. I got way more than I expected from this unusual theater event. Sarah Seaton and Jennifer Underwood give excellent performances as the leads. And all the supporting cast are wonderful too. Norman Blumensaadt has put together a top notch production. As Lisa tries to sort out her feelings about her mother and the effect her mother has has on her life, we cannot tell if she is talking to herself or the other characters or the audience members. Are we at a play or a meet-up? It blew my mind. Everyone go to this show. Collapse

      This show starts and ends with a laugh, and there are too many to count in between. Martina Ohlhauser is just perfect as the woman who unwittingly marries a man while her first husband, lost in the war, is still alive. She delivers each line with a spot on English accent, and perfect comedic timing. The three men of 'Too Many' fame, Joe Hartman, Brian Villalobos and Tony Salinas, are simply hilarious with their delivery and slapstick takes. Two weeks left... Go see this delightful comedy.       Too Many Husbands is a story about Victoria, a WWI widow who ends up marrying her husband's best friend after he disappears. All is fine and dandy, well sort of, until Bill comes back from the dead. Victoria then has some decisions to make. Different Stages' production of the play was superb! From the period costumes (1918, I believe) to the set, to the great acting, this play was charming from beginning to end. Please note that it is three hours long with two intermissions, but please also note that the show is very clever and the actor's comedic timing on point. (This makes the show very entertaining and fast paced) I recommend to anyone who is looking for some great theatre! Collapse

      A Woman, two husbands and a third more desirable because of the added extras to be gotten. Why not? Solid performances by all the cast members. Martina Ohlhauser (Victoria-the wife) toys with newly returned thought dead husband (Bill) played by Brian Villalobos and loveable & vain (new husband) played by Joe Hartman. Joe is rich in his expressions and energy. The play by Sommerset Maugham captures the fickleness of the institution of marriage, and in the end everyone lives happily ever after. Delightful, past paced, glibbly elocuted. Minor details, someone could have steamed the creases out of the curtains over the bed, made sure the rugs were tacked down so the actors didn't keep tripping over them, and while very clever to make the panelling interchangeable, they didn't lie flat against the wall and were crooked. It was a shame that those kinks hadn't been worked out as to an otherwise inspired set. Overall, a wonderful evening of entertainment. Collapse
