Considered one of the world's finest cultural archives, the Harry Ransom Center houses 30 million literary manuscripts, 1 million rare books, 5 million photographs, and over 100,000 visual artworks. Highlights include the Gutenberg Bible and the world's first photograph. The Center is used extensively for research and presents numerous exhibitions and events each year showcasing its collections.

Members of the collective created a body of work influenced in some way by the Ransom Center—its space, its purpose, its collections.       Since moving to Austin, I have been very impressed with the work that the Harry Ransom Center does and exhibits that they are able to bring to Austin. Becoming Tennessee Williams is no exception! Williams has brought so much to the literary and theatrical world. This exhibit is a fantastic look into the behind the scenes of his creative contribution to the world. I would very much recommend checking it out! Collapse

      A wonderful display of photographs! Have you ever heard of SALT Paper photos? I hadn't until I saw this exhibit. Also, see the different phases of the moon from the 1800’s, quite amazing.... Expand

      A wonderful display of photographs! Have you ever heard of SALT Paper photos? I hadn't until I saw this exhibit. Also, see the different phases of the moon from the 1800’s, quite amazing. There are so many photographs, by many wonderful photographers. It is very difficult to pinpoint anyone photo that is better than the other. I also enjoyed the display of cameras; one of my favorites was the spy camera. A really cool way to learn about photography, to see where it has been and where it is going. So get going to the Harry Ransom Center and check out this awesome exhibit and see for yourself how truly lucky we are to have a place like the Ransom Center in town! Collapse

      The fact that we have an opportunity to see such amazing works of art...and that they are such an ingrained part of the history of art... makes me feel so blessed to live in Austin! Outstanding exhibit! I will be back multiple times during the course of the time it is here! And kudos to Harry Ransom Center for not only a great exhibit but a terrific opening reception!       Film fans are certain to be intrigued by the Harry Ransom Center's new exhibit, "Making Movies." Each area of the exhibit details a distinct aspect of the movie-making process, including producing, directing, writing, acting, cinematography, sound, hair and makeup, costume design, and publicity. A wide range of movies from different eras are represented. Most intriguing are the intimate letters, handwritten comments in screenplays, and sketched storyboards from some of Hollywood's most famous movie denziens, including Alfred Hitchcock, David Mamet, Victor Fleming, and David O. Selznick. As an avid "Gone With The Wind" fan, I was most awestruck by the stunning red dress worn by Vivien Leigh in her portrayal of Scarlett O'Hara. While the exhibit was meticulously curated and accessible to a wide range of audiences, I would have liked to see a more chronological flow to some of the groupings of materials. Overall, this exhibit ranks as one of Austin's finest, and it is also free! Collapse
