Zachary Scott Theatre Center (ZACH) operates two theatre buildings located at the corner of Riverside Drive & South Lamar Boulevard on scenic Town Lake. The Whisenhunt Arena Theatre on Toomey Road and the Kleberg Stage on Riverside and South Lamar.  Free parking is available in front of both theatres.

ZACH is one of Austin's most vibrant and innovative arts organizations and Central Texas' oldest professional theatre. ZACH's mission is to engage Central Texas in a dialogue by producing professional theatre of the highest artistic quality, inspired by a unique artistic vision and to offer a diverse theatre experience which is accessible to the community as a whole. In addition, ZACH fosters artistic education, expression, and development in children, teens and adults through a variety of outreach opportunities.

      Austin favs, Martin Burke and Meredith McCall, are back for another season of the holiday favorite, The Santaland Diaries, at Zach Theater. The first half of the performance showcases Meredith’s beautiful voice through the devilishly-funny, adult material; along with vignettes of holiday horrors by both actors. After the intermission we see Martin star in David Sedaris’ real-life experience as a Macy’s Christmas elf. Oh – and what an experience! From grumpy Santas with perpetually cheerful and stupid elves, to spoiled brats and over the top mammas – we see it all through the eyes (and the wonderful comedic talent of Martin) of Crumpet – the elf name chosen by Sedaris. Martin is THE talent for this fast-paced comedy, keeping up the frenetic pace and dialogue with ease (how DOES he do that?). The show runs through 1/8/2012 – so make sure you take the time this holiday season to visit Santaland at Zach Theater with Martin and Meredith – it’ll leave you laughing all the way! Collapse

      A fearless production: electrically energetic, unapologetically rebellious, and buoyed by youthful passion. In this "spring awakening" a high school class in 1892 Germany are blooming into adulthood, primarily as they discover their sexuality, but also as they wrestle with the reigning, iron-clad moralism of the time and its suffocating expectations. There's a moment before the musical's show-stopper, when young Melchior turns to the audience and notes, "You know there's a moment when you're totally f***d". (Incidentally, f***ing plays quite the theme throughout.) He encapsulates the crisis he and his peers are in, since the older generation is offering shame and silence when the kids are gasping for guidance, encouragement, or even acknowledgement. The aggressive rock score projects their young angst loud and clear while suggesting that not much has changed since then. Except maybe - according to the work's hopeful conclusion - just maybe it has. Collapse

      The Zach Scott Theatre always strives to produce excellent work and this show is just another example of that. Spring Awakening, a musical that was awarded 8 Tonys, is a creative mixture of a late 19th Century play about adolescence with the sounds of modern rock. The juxtaposition sets the play in a different era while keeping its themes relevant and the music makes every single bit exciting to watch. Coming of age teenagers struggle with gender, sexuality, abuse and abandonment in this play and it’s unfortunate that they could not be kept safe by their overbearing parents at the end. I was taken by the director’s note about having teenagers in the cast that could’ve had shared similar struggles with the characters they played. This element gave the play authenticity and it was obvious in each of the young actor’s portrayals. The music from the show is beautifully composed and delicately takes the audience through all the levels of the play. Collapse

      Zach Scott Theatre has a true emotional winner on its hands with the musical Spring Awakening. I knew nothing of the music or story before going to see the piece and that was perfectly fine. I was surprised, touched and found that even though it was a simple set for the most part the cast made you feel it was filled from end to end with all one needed to be touched by this piece. The acting of Sara Burke, Johnny Newcomb and Jordan Barron was captivating. One could feel that with their singing and dancing alone the feeling of what it is like to be a teenager. Their acting hopefully reached even the hardest of hearts as you were just awestruck by emotion. The adult characters who played many characters Jason Phelps and Melissa Grogan brought out so many different characters-all worthy of much praise even if not likable. Aline Mayagoitia, Tiffany Mann, Josh Wechsler and Glenn Britton were just some of the teen age supporting cast that had their moments and made the most of them. SEE THIS! Collapse

      Zachary Scott Theatre’s production of Spring Awakening is excellent! All of the different elements of a show come together beautifully here. Highlights for me included the music and choreography. I had never seen or heard Spring Awakening and I was really impressed by the beautiful music and singing that was at times very sweet while at others pretty rocking. However, the lyrics often seemed abstract or metaphorical, which I can see people enjoying, but it was not for me. The choreography also really impressed me. I loved the very specific hand movements and how the movement added energy and excitement to the musical. Although I really enjoyed this show, I personally would not want to see again. Primarily because it is a little abstract and the plot is depressing. Also, I want to mention that although there is no nudity, much of the plot hinges around the growing sexuality and discovery as these characters become adults. Overall, I recommend seeing it once and I am glad that I did! Collapse

      WOW! What a show! There's no nodding off at Spring Awakening. It grabs you from the start and keeps you wide-eyed throughout. The story involves teenage angst - personal and societal - and tragedy. I always love a good tragedy, and this is a great one. The actors were just right, and they could sing and dance too. Although everyone sang well, a special shout-out goes to Sara Burke whose voice is beautiful. Johnny Newcomb is fab as the lead, Melchior. Can't wait to see him in more productions. I hadn't read through the program before the show, so during the second act, one song in particular took me by surprise, and it was the best song in show. You'll know which one I'm referring to when you hear it. Priceless! It's no wonder that Spring Awakening cleaned up at the Tony's, and no surprise the performance I enjoyed received a standing ovation. Bravo to the cast, crew, musicians, et al. Wunderbar! Collapse

      Spring Awakening is a new breed of musical- one that uses modern rock instead of more traditional modes. Sometimes that does not work, but it works beautifully with Spring Awakening. But there are many other things besides the soundtrack to admire in this musical, and Zach Scott's production of it. For one thing, it tackles issues involving adolescence- frustration at the world being different from what your parents had told you; a desire to break into something different; and most of all, discovery of sexual feelings. All of these are what the "awakening" in the title is about. Based on a controversial 19th-century German plan, Spring Awakening takes place in the same time period in Germany. From the beginning, however, it's clear that the setting is inconsequential, for the issues these young people face are those of each new generation. . The young cast sings their hearts out, and does a wonderful job at conveying the whole gamut of emotional experiences. This is a must-see. Collapse

Don't get me wrong, it's a fabulous play, but without knowing what type of person YOU are, I don't know if I can recommend this play. WARNING: THIS PLAY IS NOT FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY! In fact, if you take a little one and y'all haven't had 'that talk' yet, you will most certainly have to after this show! Wonderful acting, great music, and exciting choreography make this show worth seeing at least once for even the most conservative going theater patron. However, lyrics that are overly metaphorical at times, a depressing plot, and a strong sexual theme makes this play difficult to suggest to others. I definitely think everyone should see it once... but whether you will want to see it a second time will completely depend on what you are looking for or specifically NOT looking for from your theater going experience.       There are many elements that make a musical great, and they're all here: Supurb direction, casting, set/tech, and (this being Austin) the musicians are stellar. The score is unique and must be experienced to be fully appreciated. There is nothing easy here. Complex is an understatement. This score requires hard, hard work and a fine ear to master. The chords are dissonant;extremely difficult for any singer to master, no matter how gifted or experienced. This young cast savors every note and harmony and we hear every word. Clearly. Precisely. This production is TIGHT. It reminded me of a visual art piece that employs polar opposite elements of texture: Stark, cold, hard realities, mixed with gentle, warm, compassionate humanity. It's a multi-layered, multi-faceted work that makes one jump up and cheer. This is why we NEED live theatre. You cannot get this anywhere else, it cannot be delivered any other way. Only the bravest of artists would attempt this work. It is absolutely STUNNING! Collapse

      Bravo Barbara Chisholm! Barbara was fantastic in the practically one-woman show Red Hot Patriot. She was Molly Ivins, recalling her life experiences and stories, and some hilarious tales and insights of the Texas legislature. Spencer Carter, as the copy boy, had no lines, but provided some funny moments, and toward the end, a knife in the heart. I felt proud to be a regular reader of The Texas Observer, and I miss Molly. She'd surely have a time with the current legislature! Amen. The play was performed on the Whisenhunt stage of the Zach Scott theatre, a lovely venue. The circular stage lent itself well to this performance. Collapse
