The mission of the Vortex Repertory Company is to create and present new and innovative performances, to transgress conventional theatrical forms, to cultivate new relationships between artists and audiences, to generate new audiences through outreach to special constituencies, to nurture diversity of Vortex artists, to foster educational programming, and to anchor the Vortex.

      Vortex Theatre has the best vibe as both a theatre and a cafe to see a show. I attended the opening night show of Viper Vixens and the entire audience was very responsive. A film with a live band.... Expand

      Vortex Theatre has the best vibe as both a theatre and a cafe to see a show. I attended the opening night show of Viper Vixens and the entire audience was very responsive. A film with a live band. The silent film was very entertaining and the music was very hypnotic. I would recommend that if you have not experienced a Vortex production, go see this. I am sure you will be back for more. Collapse

      We have never seen the likes of the Vagina Deathray or the Spinning Boobies of Death. Holy MacMulligan, Batman, better hide your secret identity. The Viper Vixens, manipulated by the evil Elsa von Krause, try to take over the planet in the tradition of good Austrian villains like Hitlers and Leidels. Christina MacMulligan, Joanna Wright, and Melissa Vogt-Patterson are the Vixens, giving their all and clothes for the planet. Betsy McCann, Heather Barfield(Zoe Zulthus) and Helen Hulka(Kitty Kelly) are memorable without baring all. Andy Agne’s Annunaki show some serious muscle but Gabriel Maldonado as our hero Angelo Reyes, the Captain, puts an end to the might of the Quetzlcoatl. It’s a wild romp of a video with stop motion animation and a bevy of naked beauties. The music of the Electronic Planet Ensemble makes it all come together. Chad Salvata has created a good score and Sergio R. Samayoa has told the story visually. So it’s a very entertaining time for the audience. Collapse

      The Mutt Crackers is a surprise and a delight. Of the 50 or so audience members who attended this performance,10 were kids. I think the adults liked it more so than the kids! That said, I observed most of them at the edges of their seats dazzled by the stage antics. The theatre adage used to be "there are two things you don't want on stage: kids and animals." The Mutt Crackers dashes that phrase right away. Structured as a journey story where a young girl receives a dog for her birthday - and consequently loses it - she must journey across the land (not sure what land, exactly, but you are not there for the plot), experiencing all kinds of circus performers before she finds her dog again. Needless to say, each scene features a different entertainment: Moose and Chicken Dogs spin, heel, jump rope, scamper through pipes, into and out of carriers, and the audience just loved it all. The jugglers are amazing and really dazzle the audience. Collapse

      Mutt Cracker is an hour of pure talent both dog & human. Darren is the ring leader of an excellent multi-talented group of entertainers. This one hour show was chock full of wonderfully trained dogs that danced, jumped, twirled,etc. and were such delight to watch. Humans also danced, jumped, juggled,etc. Don't want to give away all the talent and magic this show has to offer. Only 4 shows left. Go see this entertaining show and leave with a smile on your face . Collapse

      Once again Bonnie Cullum and The V company dazzle the play space with yet another fantasy. Chad Salvata paired with Producing Artistic Director Bonnie Cullum offer Austin and surrounding areas an escape into a dream world similar to Narnia. Children and adults alike can vanish from their daily life and find themselves engulfed in rich, colorful lighting, magical costumes, and vibrant vocals.  Most of the cast performed flawlessly, several of which are underrated in the community. Christine Achico was delicate in her role. Justin LaVergne shined along side the rest of the ensemble and the set was reflective of the lighting just as the costumes were. Helen Hutka's make-up design worked seemlessly with the lighting and added another layer of brilliance to the piece as a whole. The Brothers Grimm would be proud of this one. A must see for all ages.       Bonnie Cullum as directed another great piece pure and simple at the Vortex. Sarah Silver Hands is listed as a faery tale opera for all ages and that can't be denied. When one arrives at the theatre you are welcomed to a world that the typical stage does not offer. The set and costumes are so vivid and alive with a seasonal look as it is set in a Fall type fairy kingdom and it is invaded by a Winter kingdom witch. The cast is top notch. The singing is very well done even if it is not in your typical opera sound. The female leads of Christine Achico and Betsy McCann are alive with action, character and are so much fun to watch. Another two character actress that brings two very different characters to life is Melissa Vogt-Patterson. To be scary and aluring at the same exact moment is nothing new that she has brought to the stage. The supporting cast (if you want to call them that) shine and have all their own little moments for most part of showing their character and singing abilities. Collapse

      This was my very first time seeing Vortex's Summer Youth Theatre production and I was quite impressed with the production. The youth performers were top notch! I especially loved the performances of Cassidy Timms' as Einstein, Xander Slay-Tamkin as Mobius and Joshua Michael Braun as Newton. All three when on stage make quite a trio in this humorous production. Each character is more than they seem and these fine young performers did a great job in slowly revealing each layer as the play goes on. This production, with its incredible cast and crew is a perfect example of why the Summer Youth Theatre Program has been going on for 20 years. Collapse

      The Physicists is a satirical black comedy well performed by the Summer Youth Theatre. Set in the Alps in the repurposed mansion, now used as a sanatorium, the plot centers on Mobius, who is haunted by visits from King Solomon, Beutler, who believes he is Sir Isaac Newton and Ernesti, who believes he is Albert Einstein. The drama unfolds with a police investigator wishing to question Einstein about a murder which has just taken place at the Sanatorium, the second in a short time. The Doktor Mathilde von Zahnd, who runs the establishment, is very protective of her patients. The plot is a complicated knot of double identities, good intentions gone bad, all battling to gain Mobius’ trust and his documentation. The twists and turns, guns and nuns, will keep the audience engaged and entertained to the end. The young actors were sincere and engaging, little hard to hear at times, but generally, the lines were well delivered. Congratulations to director and students on a job well done. Collapse
