Tapestry Dance Company

Tapestry Dance Company is a professional, non-profit dance organization founded in 1989 by rhythm tap dancer Acia Gray and ballet/jazz artist Deirdre Strand for the purpose of developing a foundation in multi-form dance performance and education. Initially a performing company of three, the organization has expanded to a professional company of seven resident artists, a diversified administrative and production support staff and a pre-professional and adult training facility sharing the unique Strand/Gray training syllabus.

      Fantastic! This energizing show mixes an intriguing combo of sound and silence & movement and stillness. While definitely a tap dance performance, it is also an expressive art performance. Through music, vocalizations, the spoken word of Zell Miller III, pauses and moments of stillness, this dance art shines. The highly skilled dancers make tap dancing look effortless. It was sheer joy to see them perform so effortlessly as they seemed to really enjoy themselves. This international/local dance company puts on a superb show. A definite must see!       “You must have silence to hear the rhythm”, “Are you listening?”…and the show begins. Tapestry Dance Company’s performance of Are You Listening To Me? opens with this and other phrases designed to bring you back to a lost art: the art of listening. Throughout the show, the dancers each use a phrase to explore many variations of listening. Finding the quiet in the cacophony of everyone talking at once, asking questions to delve deeper into meanings, learning to let go, be free, yet, pay attention. Acia Gray and company, along with spoken artist, Zell Miller III, weave these lessons through whispers and dance, cautiously – then explosively – as each member finds their path to listening. I love the way that each one is allowed to interpret and make the dances their own – their feet may all be doing the same steps in rhythm – but they own their dance: some with beautiful graceful arms, others with expressive body arching. Come to the Long Center and learn to listen…before it’s too late. Collapse

      I thought this performance was a really sweet family event to attend. Especially for the little ones. It was only 50 minutes long so they could sit through it without any problem. Tapesty dance... Expand

Tapesty dance Co. is incredible and I just love the jazz band too, Blue J. To me there is no better combination, dance and jazz. Collapse

      Last night I experienced an exhilarating night with Acia Gray and the Tapestry Dance Company with guest Zell Miller III. Set in an urban back alley, Zell's spoken word performance wove in and through the staccato beats of the dancers. Outstanding ensemble performances by all, but the solos told the individual stories, especially by Siobhan Cook, Travis Knights, Brenna Kuhn and Matt Shields. I loved the combination of spoken word, hip hop, jazz and serenade. All the music was controlled by a woman under the platform at the back of the stage. Another character in the urban landscape. I have been a fan of Tapestry for many years, and with Voices of Rhythm, Acia does not disappoint. You can't leave the theater without a smile on your face. Walking to my car, a student from St. Edward's said she had to come to the show as an assignment. She was not looking forward to it, but now, she was so excited by the performance, she couldn't wait to tell her friends. Another fan is born. Collapse

      VOICES OF RHYTHM: a Rhymic Tour through Spoken Word and Groove is a tour through the not-so-nice part of the city where young people stuggle to connect to each other and to their urban world. Poet Zell Miller III creates an atmosphere filled with the angry yet hopeful rhythms of 21st century youth. Tapestry's awesome new professional company uses body rhythms and amazing rhythm tap to transform hip-hop inspired beat poetry and heart-pounding rhythms into an experience of our shared human condition like no other you've seen before. Opening night was packed with people who just couldn't mute their excitement. This show will make you NEED to move and shout and love life and dance. Don't miss it. Two performances Saturday and one Sunday. You've never seen a show like it. . . It ain't The Ballet! Collapse

      This show brought back memories of my own tap dancing days from age 6 to 16. To this day, I still enjoy doing a little dance around the house. Tapping to music, or watching others tap to music, makes me feel lighter, and young at heart. Everything about the dancers and this program, from their costumes to the band, flowed.... even the admitted technical difficulties. Tapping soul and sole just helps everything feel lighter!       This is a great event for all ages. My parents were visiting and I took them to a Tapestry event earlier this year. We all loved it. It was very diverse in music and presentation.
