La Follia Austin Baroque

La Follia Austin Baroque, founded in 1980 and based in Austin, Texas, performs Baroque music using instruments and performance styles proper to the Baroque period (circa 1600-1750). La Follia celebrates over 20 years as part of Austin's lively and diverse musical scene. Focusing on music of the 17th and 18th centuries, they use instruments and performing styles appropriate to that period. They delight in performing the classics, such as the music of J.S. Bach, as well as unearthing little-known composers and musical treasures and sharing them with our audiences. Their goal is to bring this fascinating music back to life by recreating the original sounds, which are lighter, sweeter, and more transparent than those of modern instruments, and by mastering such lost arts as ensemble improvisation. Time: Friday and Saturday 8:00pm Price: $12-$15/each

      Yes, it was "like being caught in a musical and theatrical time warp" complete with period musical intruments and costuming performed by accomplished professional artists. The clean crisp sounds of the melodies intertwined with the choreography of the dancers provided an insight into that world of Lous XIV. Who knew the early French choreographers used castanets for their dancers? Very enjoyable and enlightening. Collapse

      Raison d'être. The Age of Reason and the composition and dances of that age are the reason for seasoning our musical faire with the great inventive music that lead to modern jazz. The dances were the popular forms that gave shape to the music. So this program incorporates the basic foundations of the music (in Lully and Rameau) and helps us to understand the style by giving us a glimpse of the reason for La caractéristique (that Victor Hugo always found so important). Thankfully, they don’t carry their enthusiasm for the past to its ultimate conclusion. The actual dance and music conditions of the age were barbaric and often brutal. These excellent performances are a real guide to understanding. The poise and balance of the dance and the music gives the impression of those times and helps us understand the courtly styles of both. This was a night of examples and a basic understanding. Very different than our present day: – the Age of Irrational Exuberance. Collapse

      The La Follia Austin Baroque ensemble is a gift to this city, with first-rate, serious, brilliant musicians from all over. I had thought nothing could exceed the splendor of their Three Sopranos concert last year, but the Return of the Herd of Harpsichords equaled even that superlative performance. Joining Keith Womer, harpsichordist and director of the group were two other great harpsichordists, Jeffrey Jones-Ragona of the Capital City Men's Choir, and JiMin Kim, an exquisite musician. It was an all-Bach concert that built from a concerto for ONE harpsichord and the baroque ensemble, to a concerto for two, and then three. The "Concerto for Two Harpsichords in C Minor" was tremendous, as was the brief "Fourteen Canons on the Goldberg Ground," a group of variations on a theme which became more and more complex. They say this is the LAST Herd concert, but I hope not! Sara Hessel, of KMFA, gave an introductory lecture before the music on the history of this instrument. Collapse
