Hyde Park Theatre

Hyde Park Theatre develops writers, designers, directors, and actors from within the Austin community, while at the same time producing works by exciting new and established voices of the alternative theatre scene. Goals include producing Southwest and world premieres of the best of the world's new alternative theatre, as well as those classic works of alternative theater that still has the power to challenge modern audiences. Another goal is to add the canon of American theatre by creating, developing, and producing new plays by local and national writers.

 

This project is funded and supported in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and in part by the City of Austin Economic Growth & Redevelopment Services Office/Cultural Arts Division believing an investment in the Arts is an investment in Austin’s future.       Well-developed characters, an engrossing story, and solid acting are some of my favorite things to see in a play, and Hyde Park's Marion Bridge has all 3 and more. It features three sisters as they deal with issues surrounding their relationship to each other and their mother, whose health is rapidly failing. Agnes, the youngest sister, arrives to her childhood home, and her arrival sets the chain of events in motion. Theresa, the older sister, a devout Catholic and is struggling with being recently abandoned by her husband, and the middle sister, Louise, has largely withdrawn from the world. As Agnes talks and clashes with her sisters, the sisters slowly work out the complications of their past relationships. Ultimately, Marion Bridge is about how people can re-connect with each other in the face of tragedy. The cast's chemistry and delivery is what engrosses the audience, from the low-key beginning to the cathartic ending. I hope it gets a wide audience; bravo to the cast and crew. Collapse

      One thing you know you will get with Hyde Park Theatre is a mouthful and interesting dialogue and character. Ken Webster directs another gem of three fine actresses in Daniel MacIvor's Marion Bridge. I don't know if that is the town or what but other than reason for the title everything else was answered by the end of the show. Emily Erington, Kelsey Kling and Rebecca Robinson all brought out such unique and entertaining characters. Three sisters who on the surface seem so very different and not to do a spoiler I will just mention that we see in the show the varied attempts to make a connection with each other during the event of their mother's dying. The stage is remarkable. The best I have seen that stage look in any production and credit needs to be given there. The dialogue is very thrilling and the actresses kept their accents for the show from beginning to end which often does not happen in productions. I can understand how this play won so much in 2002 and hope you get to see it Collapse

      Get yourself to this play. What this set designer did with this space is remarkable. Acting by the ensemble cast of Emily Erington, Kelsey Kling, and Rebecca Robinson make you laugh, cry, chuckle. Unfamiliar with the earlier production of Marion Bridge I didn't know what to expect but directd by the deft hand of Ken Webster, nuances were played and noticed. Bravo to the whole Technical Team, set, lighting, costuming, and loved the music. It's nice to see when a production all gels equally together to make good theater. Collapse

      This play beautifully delivers many universal messages. We laugh a lot, tear up a bit, and are sad to see it end. The actors are so intensely in tune with one another that they simply MUST be sisters. Each of them have the typical elder/middle/younger familial roles to play, and yet all are unique and endearing. Woven in the text are individual monologues that pull us into the characters' respective psyches;Daniel Macivor paints these moments in his canvas with poetic purity. The artists deliver them with crystal clarity and enchanting honesty. We fully accept each of them, warts and all, and we are smitten. The direction, sets/costumes, lights/sound - all top-notch. Plays of this caliber are why we thrive on live theatre. TV, film - no other media can enrich our lives in quite the same way. Nothing else will do. 'Marion Bridge' embodies all the elements we seek in a classic play. Savor this gem while you can. Support this theatre and these artists. Indulge yourself - you deserve it. Collapse

      Listening to Ken Webster in The Good Thief is like sitting in a small living room and having a chat with one of the locals. Webster plays the small-town thug with ease, slipping on the persona and accent, as he tells us a story. He weaves his memories of the event - and we are drawn into his world, sometimes with humor, sometimes with sadness. The Good Thief is one of Irish-playwright Conor McPherson's earlier works, and the monologue is in good hands with Webster. Come pull up a chair in the snug, Irish room, sit back with your favorite beverage and wait to be drawn in to the story. Collapse

      Applauds to Ken Webster and his superior casting. Martin McDonagh's script was so theatre of the absurd and played to perfection. The story of a man in a 37 year search of his hand severed by sadistic youths. The story begins to unfold with a hand deal gone bad. Two youths skillfully played by Aaron Alexander and Michelle Keffer arrive with a hand in hopes of getting money, but things go awry. Added to this is the "boxer" guy aka receptionist played by Mical Tejo whose character acts as a go between the couple and the Man in search of his hand. While threats of killing are exchanged,the girlfriend who can't keep her mouth shut and the boyfriend that see's his life flashing before him a comedy of errors unfolds. Everyone gets into the act including the mother via telephone. This is a deliciously funny, entertaining, well scripted and directed production. What can be more funny than a suitcase full of hands!       For me, one important mark of an enjoyable play is the ability to have both tension and humor and make both work on their own terms when needed. Hyde Park Theatre's production of "A Behanding in Spokane" pulls that off beautifully, in addition to making very frightening situations funny without the audience feeling awkward. It begins with a one-handed man, Mr. Carmichael, as he deals with Toby and Merilyn. He claims that his hand had been cut off by hillbillies 37 years ago, and has been offering a cash reward to anyone who could locate it since. The couple bring what they claim is the hand, but Carmichael calls them out on their fraud, leading to an agonizing situation which I will not reveal here. And entering the mix is the hotel receptionist, Mervyn, who can't resist putting his foot in his mouth. Ken Webster and Aaron Alexander work great together as the disturbed villain and the desperate survivor. Many more things I could say but space does not allow, so, go see this one!! Collapse

      Playwright Martin McDonagh stories have a way of being entertaining no matter what the subject matter. The case in point is this play. At the core of the story is a mans pursuit of finding his lost hand. I will leave it like that so its not so much a spoiler alert. The setting of this play is a hotel room that was very well crafted. One is immediately taken to the story with the grit and grime of the room. Director Ken Webster has the unique talent of being one of the few people I have seen be able to successfully direct and act in the same play and not appear to suffer at either end. His delivery, timing and character would make one compelled to hear his characters story. Michelle Keffer and Aaron Alexander are excellent as the trapped couple who had tried to do business with Webster's Carmichael role. They prove that if you deliver absurd lines with straight faced conviction you are golden. Mical Trejo completes the small cast as the hotel receptionist that is as twisted but a joy. Collapse

      If one is to do a one person show they need to be for sure one thing, able to carry a show by themselves. Without a doubt this is the situation for Ken Webster. I have seen shows directed by him and ones he has acting in and find no real fault in what he does. In this show Ken Webster plays a drunken Irish theatre critic who falls in with a group of sexy and dangerous London vampires. This story holds most interest for me in the delivery that Ken exhibits. In a show with a minimum of stage movement Ken holds the audience attention. Collapse
