Founded in May 1986 as Austin's first professional opera company, the Austin Lyric Opera has rapidly become a cultural touchstone for the fine arts community in the Central Texas Region and gained national acclaim as a producer of great opera.

      Austin Lyric Opera did a wonderful job of kicking off their 25th Anniversary by revisiting the opera that got them their start! The Magic Flute has always been a favorite of mine and the singers were outstanding. Kudos especially go to The Queen of The Night and The Speaker. It was also great that two of the original cast of the 1987 performance (Sally Wolf and Kevin Langan) are performing currently in this! Collapse

      If you have ever wondered if you should go to the Opera because you weren't sure if you would be able to understand what was going on, Italian Girl in Algiers is the perfect example of proving that theory wrong! I don't know a drop of Italian but found myself laughing and smiling throughout the entire performance. Operas focus on themes and stories that speak to a wide audience. And you throw in a sensational love triangle/square/pentagon and you have a deliciously fun evening of entertaining! Very much worth going to see!! Collapse

      Whether Gioachano Rossini wrote this two-act opera in 18 or 27 days (still disputed) is beside the point. He was only 21 when he wrote it in the early 1800s! It was one of his 39 operas, plus sacred and chamber music, songs and piano pieces! And he retired at age 37! With its inspired, song-like melodies, travelogue of lust, love, slavery, chicanery and buffoonery, he had a right to smile smugly for another 39 years. Just check out an early photograph of him at UT-Austin’s Ransom Humanities Research Center. “The Italian Mozart,” as he was nicknamed, proudly wears the mantle of “most popular opera composer in history.” Well, at the time. “Italian Girl” holds up well in ALO’s staging, even at the end of three hours, thanks to a wonderful set with angled ramps that convey a sense of sand dunes, a storybook, pop-up set, and the clever updating with a 1930s airplane, rather than the original ships.       I direct my comments to readers unsure if opera is worthy of their limited leisure time or, perhaps, a threat to their progrock or pop melodies playlists. You’ll never know unless you go. I say emphatically, “Give ‘Italian Girl...’ a try.” The program’s quick-read synopsis and the brief supertitles above the stage make the humorous plot easily understood and followed. The vocal coloraturas, in Italian, are simply icing on this zest-filled cake. The cast and creative team bring the convoluted story to life in excellent fashion. ALO serves up quick, agile, comedic acting; interesting, vibrantly colorful costumes, and an amazing set that opens up like an enormous pop-up book. The entire production is visually appealing. Then there is Rossini’s wonderful score. Uplifting. As Principal Conductor Richard Buckley noted, “incredible vocal pyrotechnics.” The gifted cast is awe-inspiring. Rossini may have written this opera quickly, but it has endured for almost 200 years for good reason. Collapse

      Upon the opening of Act I of Austin Lyric Opera’s La Traviata, the audience is dazzled with the visual splendor of 19th Century Paris. Set and Costume designer Desmond Heeley and Lighting Designer Christine A. Binder have created the atmosphere of abundance, wealth and luxury with warm, rich colors, soft, billowing lines, and the illusory techniques of dissolving curtains. In ALO’s current production of La Traviata, the singers, orchestra, and stage direction are of such high quality that the entire evening packs moment after moment of sensory delight. Pamela Armstrong, who plays Violetta Valery has such a rich and textured vocal quality, that it is difficult to get enough of her singing. Her voice is at once soulful and lyrical and is matched with fine acting talent. There are many great performances in this production of La Traviata, but others that particularly stood out were Ann Sauder (Annina), Grant Youngblood (Giorgio), Liz Cass (Flora), the Chorus and the Austin Symphony.       This one act collaborative production was performed in an intimate setting with minimal set/props as chamber operas were meant to be enjoyed. The music (involving few instruments) was wonderful. Changes in harmony/tempo and repetitive patterns reflected the mood of the characters from subtle, sensitive to dramatic tension. The audience is drawn into the lives of the couple and the doctor who tries to help. The vocals were beautiful. Matthew Trevino as the patient conveyed his sense of loss, confusion, and accommodation to his loss. Cara Johnston embodied strength, frustration, and love as his wife. Brian Joyce portrayed a curious and caring doctor. The opera based on a true story of a man who organizes, copes with, and makes sense of his world through music also reminds us of the importance of music in life. This production simultaneously kicks off the few week Chamber Music Festival and a new season for the Lyric Opera in style. Collapse

      Experience being a lost child in the scary woods and then uplifted by angels to heavenly, dream realms. Be visited by the Sandman and taken presoner by the wicked, children-eating Gingerbread Queen. Opera has never been so easy to follow, delicious to listen too, and user friendly. The dream sequences transport you beyond the stage into the mystical, and the story reminds you never to abandon yourself or others. Great job Austin.
