      SRT, originally a German gymnastics-dancing-feasting hall in 1871, became a feast of Austin indie music Sat. night. Three diverse bands – The Altered Five, Hello Wheels, Mother Falcon – had the S-R-O audience doing appreciative back flips. The former Shriners Temple, known for years as a wonderful children’s theatre, still sports the mixed mission style architecture and Arab accents adopted a century ago. Under new management, SRT is smartly emerging from a sleepy cocoon to embrace added live entertainment prospects– concerts, art happenings, western swing dancing, puppet and comedy shows and…well, stay tuned! All six of the Altered Five’s members created strong mellow-dies from jazz greats. Hello Wheels’ energetic story-telling, rich harmonies + clever arrangements were delightful. Mother Falcon, basking in the glow of its first universal release, was incredibly fresh and entertaining. Band or Orchestra? Whatever, they render a cohesive, compelling and addictive satisfying sound. Collapse

      Austin’s oldest theatre is reinventing itself thanks to new Exec.&Artistic Dir., Emily Marks. SRT proved it still rocks by introducing 3 excellent examples of Austin’s music scene at a grand re-opening concert. Audience (musicians, too) were pleasantly surprised by the large stage & unexpected sound quality: 257 seats, main floor + balcony. The Altered Five, a jazz/funk combo delivered both hot & cool numbers, Charlie Parker to Gus Kahn. Hello Wheels, a stomp folk quartet, rolled out sweet harmonies & some funny tunes. (Memo: SRT, lose home video!) Headliners Mother Falcon, celebrating its first nat’l release, generated an audience-mesmerizing sound; left me wanting more. The 17-member orchestra performed sans sheet music, mysteriously communicating in ever-changing solos, rifts and a flow that filled SRT with excitement & admiration. Am I, brand new fan, a Falconer or Falconhead? SRT still has children’s theatre, but plans exciting adult programs. Let your fingers run to its website. Collapse
