      This is the kind of experiment which looks to push the definitions of a traditional theater experience and include the audience in what becomes more exciting and intriguing the more you allow your own imagination to take over. While my only real complaint about the show is the awkward introduction to what my role as participant exactly is, when I allowed myself to completely immerse myself in the fantasy of being part of these strangers lives, the event became what I think it really was meant to be--an experience in which the traditional fourth wall is blasted through in an effort to provide actor & audience with a shared communal experience that, rather than being (entirely) scripted, can shift with the actions of any one person. It's certainly an exciting premise, and while the actual trajectory of what was going to happen at this gathering was guessed pretty early on by a majority of the attendees, the satisfaction of events to come was left entirely up to each individual.       This show was so interactive and innovative. It combined social media with love in such a lovely and passionate way. The story is about Ryan Peterson, an Austin school teacher who travels abroad and falls in love with Elizabeth, a girl from the UK. We (the audience) is sitting in on one of their Skype dates to meet this girl that we wouldn't know... The emotions you feel sitting (and participating) in the audience are very real.       "You Wouldn't Know Her" is an example of a kind of up-close, interactive theatre that is becoming increasingly popular in Austin that does not have a traditional stage, and/or where audience participation significantly effects the story. It takes place in an apartment, where the audience comes in and interacts with the main character, Ryan Peterson (Judd Farris), as he interacts with his dear overseas girlfriend, Elizabeth Watson, via Skype. The audiences get to see and interact with each other live on a big projection screen as the two characters talk via Skype. At one point, they actually asked me to sing when I was selected to come up to the video camera and talk to to the other city! Just as Skype blurs boundaries, the show itself does, in a mesmerizing and creative way. There is a twist and tension toward the end of the hour-long program, which I will not reveal here. But I get the feeling this will not be the last entry in the series. Congrats to Beth Burns and Hidden Room. Collapse

      Thoroughly enjoyed this foray into the total embrace of current technology melded with theatre. You arrive at Ryan's apartment only to find out that you are already acquaintances. Judd Farris plays Ryan perfectly, immediately putting you at ease as the amiable host of the performance. Using Skype, we then get an opportunity to meet his girlfriend Lizzy. After some back and forth questions and answers for the London (Lizzy's city) and Austin (Ryan's city) "guests," the real drama unfolds. This really is a very creative and unique experience, and I really loved the way they pulled the audience into the experience. As one reviewer mentioned, it could have been longer, but at the heart of it, isn't that what every producer/director/actor wants the audience to feel? Don't miss this show... Collapse

      Hello from the Hidden Room! Our Sunday performance of You Wouldn't Know Her has been pushed to 3:00PM Austin-time. US Daylight Savings time begins Saturday night/Sunday morning, so please set your clocks forward one hour before you retire for the evening. The UK doesn't have their DST for another week, so viewers in that part of the world have their showtime unchanged.       When you arrive at #303 in the East Village Lofts in Austin, TX you are greeted warmly by an old friend, Ryan Peterson. The reason you are here is to meet Ryan's girlfriend Elizabeth. The only thing is she lives in London and you are going to meet her and her friends and family via Skype. This play is a multimedia and interactive experience that is entertaining, funny, touching and moving all at once. The actors were fantastic, dedicated to their roles, and never missed a beat. I just wish it had been longer, I was left wanting more. The play speaks for our times and highlights the growing impact that technology has on our everyday lives. At times it may seem that it is pushing us apart but as this play proves it also brings us together across the world to create a better understanding of different people, cultures and ethnicities. There are two more performances, March 12 & 13 @ 2pm in Austin or you can watch live via streaming video at roundhouse.org.uk. Enjoy! Collapse

      "A Most Unsettling & Possibly Haunted Evening in the Parlour of Bros Grimm" (I will simply call it "Grimm" from now on), is an apt Halloween event for theatre goers looking for a relatively short and atmospheric show. Grimm essentially involves a narrator reading some of the grimmest versions of the Brothers Grimm's stories, with the help of Trouble Puppet's creations, and accompanied by period-appropriate music. Jennifer Davis's costumes and music for me were what really provided the atmosphere. The narrator has a distinguished, engaging speaking voice as well. Those expecting puppets similar to what were seen in Trouble Puppet's Frankenstein will be disappointed, though the ones that are used have their charm. The only problem with the venue is that one can have a difficult time seeing the action in some places, so get there early. Other than that, if you are looking for some sumptuous, spooky fun this Halloween weekend, seeing Grimm is a good way to go. Collapse
